#365positivity: 7/9: Photo Shoot + Carmina Burana

Jul 09, 2014 16:56

Did a photo shoot this afternoon with me in my period dress (sewn authentically according to Austenesque times) reading a historical novel. Every time I get to wear that gown, it's cause for good cheer. I had a bonnet and gloves to complete the attire. A photo was duly sent to the historical fiction editor in London who had requested it for a conference presentation she was putting together.

This morning, I was looking over my notes from last night's singing of Carmina Burana by Carl Orff (1936) as part of a community learn-n-sing series and was reminded anew how very much fun the music is (and how hard). Those words in multiple languages with a Germanic accent come at you so fast, sightreading is a challenge. But I survived the experience and greatly enjoyed it. I was very familiar with the music, having heard it an umpteen number of times, so that certainly helped in my reading.

The text of Carmina Burana is a set of 23 secular poems from the Codex Buranus a c13th manuscript compiled at the Benediktbeuern monastery by monks. Yes, all those poems about falling in love, drinking to excess, dancing without restraint, behaving lewdly those women of certain repute, and other lascivious behavior are written by celibate but bawdy-minded medieval monks. (Burning bitterly with violent anger...I give myself to vice, eager for the pleasures of the flesh.) There's even an aria by a swan as it is caught, mounted on a spit, roasted, and eaten (!!). (Once I lived on lakes, when I was a swan...Now I lie on a plate and cannot fly. I see bared teeth!)
