And so season premier week comes to a close. Shows and thoughts as follows:
::
Cold Case - Confession: There's a reason why I don't catch this show weekly. I cry. Every. Single. Time. At the end, the final scene with Lilly where they do show the victim 'alive' then fading away. Always gets me. Always. Of course, Sunday it hit me earlier when the falsely accused convict was freed from prison. But I Always Cry. And I can't handle the emotional wringer they somehow manage to put me through on a weekly basis, so it has become a 'catch it when I think of it show'. But there was much love for this episode. Much. Love.
::
The Hills - Not a premier, but it's TV discussion! Must include guilty pleasure #2 (#1 will be included further down)! Completely don't blame Lauren for being all :-| at Jason's engagement considering A.) he's her ex and B.) she had only just learned he was dating someone the day before (in MTV editing land, at least).
Dear Speidi, The prearranged paparazzi photoshoot to show off the old-new boobage and rhinoplasty? Completely old. And ripping off Baywatch? At least get the swimsuit right (hot pink bikini and red rescue gear? even I know better). (But even that wasn't as bad as the "golfing" shoot.) So glad you're down to less than five minutes a show the last few shows. You two give me the creeps.
Also: Go Elodie! Eeeeeeeeee!
In other news, started watching Season 1 through Netflix. Weird watching Heidi's antics knowing what I know from seasons 2 and 3. Spent the show after Heidi crashed the party wanting Lauren to kick her out then and save herself the trouble of the next two seasons.
::
NCIS - Oops. Skipped that one. My excuse is that I was wanting to rewatch up to this season (missed most of the last few) and didn't get finished. I think this is going to turn into a 'get the DVDs through Netflix after the season is over' show.
::
The Unit - Hrmmm... Chickened out on the premier long enough to miss the first half. Netflix will be sending season 2 (seen part of it but not the finale, hence the chickening out) soon. Second half was very interesting, even if I didn't recognize Jonas at first. (And can you say YUM to the shaved head and goatee? He looked so much younger as well!) On pins and needles over what happens with Mack (favorite character!), though I can't stand Tiffy and have to say some of the spoilers about those two this season are making me happy.
There is much talk on the message boards about the new intro, which I missed due to being chicken. Will have to check out CBS interscope to see it (and first half of the premier). While I actually really like the cadence beginning, I must admit to being shallow intrigued about rumors about the guys in suits looking all James Bond. Rowr.
Next week the Hunted become the Hunters. Is it Tuesday yet? PLEASE?
::
Cane - This is the show I wanted to like. No, wanted to love. Think about it: Jimmy Smits? Hector Elizondo? Rita Moreno? How can you get a better cast than that? Oh, by adding in Polly Walker and Nestor Carbonell and Ken Howard.
Like I said. I wanted to love it. I didn't. If I wanted to watch a soap opera at night I'd tape Guiding Light during the day (except I'm about five years behind). This was a good reminder why I like my police procedural dramas. I mean really. Just about every other scripted drama I'm discussing here is a police procedural in some form. The Unit technically isn't, but it still has the feel of one to me. Or maybe I just like it.
::
Eureka - Again, not a premier, instead the first parter of a season finale? Not certain. And obviously didn't watch. But this is definitely one of those 'watch DVDs through Netflix after they come out' show. I like it, but I have to be in the right frame of mind to really enjoy it. Plus, it is definitely a much better marathon show than once a week show. But hey! Kinda sorta police procedural in a Sci-Fi way!
::
America's Next Top Model - Not a premier again, but first I caught of this cycle (I usually skip the tryouts and boot camp eps and wait until the move into the house/eliminations). I stopped watching last cycle because I was too annoyed by too many of the models. Not certain how it'll go this time. Interesting about the commitment to being 'green', appluadable but I'm afraid it's more of a gimmick than any real concern. BUT - loving the no smoking this year. One of the reason I stopped watching last cycle was it was always the girls outside, smoking and ragging on other girls. I was seriously convinced that Renee and Diana were going to turn into smokestacks.
Not surprised by the cut. Not really surprised by the first callout after seeing the picture. Yeah her partner was ragging on her after the shoot, but DAMN. Heather may be socially awkward due to her Asperger syndrome, but she took a great picture.
::
Criminal Minds - I've been waiting SO long for this. Especially considering everything that happened this summer. The episode was good, not season premier awesome but as far as I'm concerned that is forgivable. This was the episode not aired last season due to the V-Tech tragedies, which then had to be cut and edited to add Gideon's farewell framing bits in order to make it work with Mandy's sudden departure and then there was also the new(ish) Strauss storyline. Hence not the best as there are probably really good parts on the cutting room floor. Note to producers: Put full episode (all of original episode and all framing bits) on the DVD when it comes out. Will make a nice treat for fans. (Or give option to watch original episode in original format without framing bits. Surely you still have it somewhere?)
I actually really liked... okay maybe liked isn't the right word. But this show is all about pushing boundaries and the fact that it ended the way it did (the case, not Gideon leaving or Hotch being suspended) is one of the great things about the show. A girl wanted to die but couldn't handle killing herself, so she killed a friend (okay, maybe not a friend but a classmate she 'actually kinda liked', but she's also a social outcast at a small university) to get a suspected serial killer out of prison. Who she killed when he refused to kill her. Who may or may not have actually killed those girls since there was no evidence, just a profile. Was the profile right? Was he an innocent man who was murdered on their watch? Is the real killer still out there and moving to another place to kill?* Or was he refusing her request because he knew they were being watched on security camera? Aaaaahhhhh!!!!!
I'm really looking forward to the next few episodes and the addition of JM to the team. I'm going to give the show and writers the benefit of the doubt if the next few eps (like this one) aren't top form because they were suddenly rewriting to fit Mandy's departure while filming. And while Mandy was originally my draw to the show (loved Chicago Hope, which, btw, I had completely forgotten Thomas Gibson was on), I love the show for the writing, the ensemble and everything. While I respect the decisions of those who are going to stop watching b/c Mandy left, it really irks me to see them saying it was all the show's fault because they didn't give him anything good to work with. WTF? As one person on the TWOP messageboard put it: two mental breakdowns, murder of his girlfriend by the 'one that got away', nearly getting Elle and Reid killed, and more, there was plenty of material. Nothing against him, but he just has a short attention span with TV (see: Chicago Hope) and said himself the dark subject matter disturbed him. Oh well, best wishes to him, but I know where I'll be every Wednesday night.

CSI - Tuned in to see the fate of Sara. I had heard the rumor that she had signed on for five eps, so unless they were doing a bunch of flashbacks or some crazy (for them that is) ghost sequence, I was pretty sure she wasn't going to die. That said, it turns out she's signed on for maybe eight episodes, so I'll tune in on Thursdays until she leaves (besides, the 'you two need to get your stories straight' quip from the preview for next week was enough to get me tuned in then) in November (and possibly stick around to catch the CSI/WAT crossover). I'll probably cut the show loose for good after that** - still catch the occasional episode but only if I'm bored and have the TV on. Catherine still annoys me like an annoying thing. I liked Greg better as a lab tech than on the scene, don't really care for the new lab guy, etc. And while I'm undecided on the Grissom/Sara*** storyline, which seems to be what irks a lot of people, Sara is and has been one of my favorite female characters on TV for quite a while. I'll miss her. She's real, she's likeable, she doesn't have questionable ethics and isn't botoxed within an inch of her life.
::
Big Shots - There was temptation to watch this, but I started WAT instead (but didn't finish) so I skipped. Reviews say it sucked like a sucking thing, so I'm probably not going to tune in.
::
Without A Trace - I have to admit I wanted to watch because of the potential James Marsters arc. And I'm not a big Buffy fan. I just think it is interesting to see him doing someone completely different. Instead I was completely unenthused by the storyline (let's have celebrities adopt a baby from a Third World country! and then kidnap him!) and I just couldn't get into the episode. Ended up turning off the TV 15 minutes in. Sam still annoys me like an annoying thing and Jack isn't on my happy list right now either. Not only did he have an affair with her (pre-show if I remember, but while his character was married), but he covered for her murdering someone****! What one of the biggest reason's I HATE Catherine on CSI? Because she got away with murder! I Do Not respect TV shows that are all 'our good guys are above the law and so the law doesn't apply to them'. Not On.
So, not certain the James Marsters arc is enough to keep me watching. Not when I have such a hate on for two main characters. Because while I love Vivian and Martin, they're not enough.
::
Women's Murder Club - Is it October 12 yet??? [/whine]
::
Numb3rs - Raise your hand if you were truly surprised by the "Colby is a triple agent" storyline? Me? Not so much. Cheryl had stated on the record that Dylan Bruno was signed on for season 4. So unless they were turning him into a Big Bad (and while I like Colby, that is laughable because he is definitely the "brawn" of the show - though he did prove that there might be more brains than you'd think since he played triple agent), they had to be proving him to be a good guy after all.
Val, the years have not been kind to you. *put in Real Genius* But you make an awesome evil genius and I kinda wish you had survived to play evil genius all season long, but diva that you are I doubt you woulda signed on for that. *sigh* I'll remember the good times we had.
I love Colby running episodes. Really. One Hour - so much eye candy. And it's not like Dylan Bruno is the best looking guy on the show, but he just looks really good running. And the wifebeater with sunglasses and hat. Oddly enough, quite with the yum. And I'm not a huge Colby fan, I just love the guys (and half of the girls) on the show.
(Love Millie and Megan. Would love Liz if she wasn't running hot then cold - one minute she's all 'let's hook up' (she was the one who made the move on him by showing up when her date ditched her before she transferred to LA) then she's 'I'm worried what our relationship could do to my career', then she's all needy high school 'Did Don say anything about me???' to Charlie. If she's worried about the effect of dating a co-worker who is sometimes a superior and was a former instructor might have on her career, she should have just said no and left it at that. (Which Don should have understood and been okay with.) Besides, Don has had how many girlfriends or former girlfriends during the show? Boy gets around (and if I remember from one episode, may have a bit of a reputation in the Bureau for that or just in general? Or was that something else?). With that in mind, she shouldn't have gone there without it being a sure thing and as she pointed out in the stolen medical aid episode last season, she's not sure it's a sure thing. Heck, if she was so worried about her career she shouldn't have had the 'hook ups' they alluded to her and Don having whenever she was in town before her transfer, like with the power outage episode.
As for Amita, I had a strong negative reaction to the student/professor relationship between Charlie and Amita from day one. Will never like the relationship because of that. The ethical implications are staggering. Truthfully, I would have preferred her leaving for the Harvard job and returning later for a potential relationship (obviously they don't know if the show would be/have been around long enough for that so they didn't go there) but in my mind that would have been better and made a distinction between the student/teacher phase of their relationship and peer/peer phase because of the separation.)
Apparently which ever Scott brother it was that directed this ep was all about the hair despite having none himself. Love Megan's haircut. Actually thought Larry's fuzz was understandable (he's in a monastery, it's not like they're all about physical beauty so there isn't the societal pressure to shave daily). Still prefer Don with the slightly longer hair of season 1 (and 2?) to the super short. David has no hair either and didn't notice much different with Colby.
Ended the episode saying "David, pull your head outta your ass" to the TV. And then the preview! With Colby saying "FBI". I will admit there was a squee (granted a mini!squee as the windows were open and cats were sleeping on my lap, but there was squee).
Okay, a lot heavier on the N3 because I just watched the ep last night. I'm considering making TV round up posts for the week, depending on how my shows go, so from now on I'll probably try to at least right bits on my shows up during the week.
::
I've been checking out epguides.com, trying to decide what shows (if any) I might substitute into my new line up. Bones is a possibility since I think I'm forgoing NCIS, but I've only seen one episode (beauty pagent girl found in sewer or something like that). K-Ville is really tempting to lead into The Hills, but I want to give Samantha Who? a shot AND MTV is notorious for starting episodes early. Granted I can always catch it one of the fifty bajillion times they rerun through the week, but it is still an annoyance. I'll probably switch over to SVU instead of Cane if I keep the TV on after the Unit. I kinda like turning it off to play with the baby cats and do some reading before bed. Same with Life. I have a bad tendency to just keep it on for CSI:NY after CM, but Life does look intriguing. May see if NBC has the first episode online. Was going to opt out of WAT for Big Shots, but reviews are so bad I'm considering it a no. At the same time, like having my Thursdays empty for Knitting meetups, so may forego all together after I finish with CSI. Caught the end of Moonlight, which was as bad as I expected it to be, so I really have high hopes for Women's Murder Club. James Patterson apparently gave it a thumbs up, which is good as it is based on his books. Really my must sees are CM, N3 and the Hills. Lead ins and outs would be nice but not necessary. The Unit might become a must see, depends on what happens next week.
Any suggestions?

*Do you have any idea how awesome it'd be to have a later episode where there are more murders that are similar and fit the profile and they realize their dead 'serial killer' wasn't the serial killer? Do you have any idea of what the implications would be to the characters? And if Strauss hasn't been booted yet, the implications for the team??? Eeeeeeeeee!!!!! I kinda hope they do it. Because I trust these writers to do it right.
**Like I said, I respect the decisions of those leaving CM because of Mandy's departure, because I'm probably pretty much going to do the same with CSI. *shrugs* To each his own.
***Yes, as someone is bound to point out, I am (at least when I read fic) a Grissom/Sara shipper. But you know the saying 'be careful what you wish for' - it's kinda like that. I really liked the UST between them. But the networks invariably Get. It. Wrong. when they actually try to do the shipping.
***** I'll admit I haven't seen many episodes since they started the actually dating storyline, but I don't hold out much hope. NOTHING will top the scene in 'Primum Non Nocere' where they're talking about sports and Grissom says baseball is a beautiful game, Sara asks "Since when were you interested in beauty?" and Grissom answers "Since I met you." That was SEASON 2 and it is such a great moment that it just sticks with you.
****I saw 'At Rest' in reruns earlier this fall and hadn't heard any casting news about the show. I spent the short time between Sam saying that she was going to tell the truth and the end (pretty much a commercial break) going "YES! She's leaving!" and being all happy, dancing around the living room
****** and considering starting watching the show again. And then Jack made his move. And my dislike of both characters grew. Grrr.
*****This is why I am alternately thrilled and apprehensive about spoilers I've heard re:Criminal Minds.
******Okay, maybe not dancing around the living room, but definitely considering it. I would have if Jack hadn't made his move. Trust me.
Final note: iTunes has the premiers of Bones, Gossip Girl, K-Ville and more available for free right now. Amazon unbox has those and a few more as well. Seeing as it looks like my planned viewing schedule is changing, I'll be checking some of those out. (And taking advantage of online streaming for others.)
