So, Neferet is acting suspicious and being scary and bringing up all of these offensive references to real-life incidents of persecution, and all Zoey is worried about is whether or not Aphrodite has told Neferet about Loren Blake? Not only is she stupid, her priorities are seriously messed-up. And she's supposed to be our protagonist. Good grief.

Well, this is the same girl who saw red-eyed vampires twice and still is thinking "Eh, might just be random students with red eyes, better not mention it". Rather insulting that she's supposed to be an "average teen" or wahtev

You know, I keep getting the sense that these so-called "average teens" aren't very average at all.

You know, this chapter got me thinking: in a better story, this could slowly be the moment where Zoey starts to suspect that there's something up with Ferret, and starts going against everyone else's prejudice against Aphrodite and work with her. But what does she worry about instead? Getting caught out about Loren Blake instead! >.< And that whole Deus Ex Machina power or whatever it is was so hard to follow I didn't even bother ( ... )

The sad thing is, that's what I think the Casts thought they were doing! Instead of pacing it well though, they keep shoving it back to later books. >_The trouble with having a book or show that compares prejudice against vampires or other monsters with sexism, religion, and racism is that if you don't handle it right, it falls flat. After all, vampires, by nature, survive by feeding off of others Even if you make a universe where they can get blood safely, there's always the argument that minorities don't have the potential to freak out and grab the nearest person and drink them dry ( ... )

I am sadily reminded of XOHitsuhina's fanfic Dos Espada for the Bleach fandom that I sporked. She at least has an excuse of being a very young Suethor.

Doesn't anyone get that Neferet is evil? anonymous February 10 2013, 02:51:14 UTC
I mean, seriously, what the fuck? She shows a disturbing lack of caring about fledglings and humans. She's totally xenophobic. She claims persecution whenever she's confronted with a difficult question or forced to move out of her echo chamber of hate and apathy. Why hasn't someone dealt with her?

Oh, and comparing the "persecution" vampires are suffering (which seems to mostly stem from a fringe group so over the top they make the Westboro Baptist Church look like saints) to what African-Americans went through? Classy.

And you did not just trivialize the Greenwood Riots! Are you going to name-drop Kristallnacht next?

No. They don't. In spite of all the things you pointed out, in spite of the fact that she all but is twirling a handlebar mustache, in spite of the fact that she's so obvious that a genre savvy person would dismiss her as antagonist on the grounds that she's TOO obvious, no one thinks she's the Big Bad. In fact, the TV Tropes page for this series has this ( ... )

Yeah, I noticed something seriously wrong was up with her in Marked, when she went on her whole "Humans suck and fledglings should abandon their human friends and family" rant. I also figured out that she'd be doing something nasty to those kids that Zoey narced on.

And yes. Apparently actually getting Neferet arrested is taking the entire. Frigging. Series.

Has anyone here ever seen Yugioh the Abridged Series? Because the level of sheer obliviousness here is approaching when Marik pretended to be "Malik Blishtar".
