The silence of the courtyard at night was her only refuge. During the day, there was work, and whenever she was near the office, more work seemed to find her. Her room never felt safe, secluded, or remotely home-like. Thus, she found solace in the short-clipped grasses that felt warm and inviting beneath her bare feet. She could rest her head on the low bench and gaze up at the stars for hours, and somehow, in this, she found the peace her soul so desperately sought.

She felt the presence behind her just as she was about to lay her head on her arm, and she thought that, as usual, the intruder would leave once they saw that the space was occupied. There was a moment of silence as the figure moved closer. Perhaps they hadn't seen her. She opened her mouth to speak just as two pale arms wound their way around her shoulders. She froze.

The voice was low, and all too familiar. "Why are you here?"

"I could ask the same of you."

"I'm here because you want me to be here."

Her voice caught in her throat before she could respond. Wasn't it just like him to say something like that?

"I'm here because you hate me."

"I don't hate you."

His lips moved closer to her ear. "You do. I'm here because you miss me. I'm here because you enjoy the pain. I'm here because there's nothing you want more in this world than to feel this way, even when you're alone." She hoped that he really hadn't slid his tongue over the shell of her ear after he said that.

Somehow she gathered the strength to slump, her head falling forward toward her bent knees as his hands slid up her arms and away from her body.

Her cheek brushed the edge of the bench, and she awoke with a start. She blinked hard, focusing on the moon before glancing around the courtyard to see that she truly was alone.

There were certain things she couldn't escape, no matter where she went.
