Bertie laughed as he watched his snowball sail through the air and land with a soft thud on the nose of one of the park's sculptures.
"Right on the snozzer, Jeeves! Jolly good aim, what?"
"Quite so, sir," Jeeves murmured, giving the distance a calculating look.
"Think you could match that?" Bertie turned to look at his valet, teasing. "Surely you can throw a fair distance - your arms are certainly strong enough."
Jeeves looked at the snow, then at Bertie. "I am afraid that I must pass this time, sir."
This got a huff from Bertie, but he shrugged. "Sure thing, Jeeves. I can wait to see your throwing arm." At Jeeves' nod he adjusted his coat and returned to the path, continuing on their walk.
Now, Bertie trusted that Jeeves would follow him, and so, several minutes of walking later, when Bertie said 'Jeeves?' and got no reply, he was understandably confused by the silence. He turned to see where Jeeves had gotten off to when -
A snowball thumped into his nose and burst apart in a puff of snow.
"What?" Bertie said, baffled for a moment, blinking rapidly to clear the snow from his eyelashes.
When the snow cleared, he saw Jeeves standing where they had been minutes before, with the telltale signs of snow on his gloves becoming apparent as Jeeves moved to catch up with Bertie.
"I - Did you throw that, Jeeves?"
"I am afraid that I must say yes, sir." Jeeves managed to look properly contrite even as he wiped the snow from his gloves. "The timing was...appropriate, I believe."
"Jeeves," Bertie said slowly. "Am I correct in saying that if I give the proper rejoinder to this turn of events, you will obliged to reciprocate?"
"Only if the snowball connects, sir."
Bertie nodded thoughtfully, then bent down and scooped up some snow. "I can most certainly live with that, Jeeves!" When he bent up, Jeeves was already retreating off a fair distance, but this only made Bertie grin as he let his snowball fly.
(A fair amount of time later, Bertie conceded the match to Jeeves (who had been hit precisely once) and treated them both to mugs of hot cocoa.)
