May 21, 2008 00:57

Well, that Blake paper is DONE. *FINALLY*. OMG
we'll totally not think about the fact that it kind of suuucks T_T

And some very long overdo art!!! even if most of you have seen it already
MILTON: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL mweehehe

Remember my crazy Milton thing last semester that I handed in like a week late?
THIS IS IT! <3<3<3 Okay the photoshopping is ghetto, but this was like, completely on the fly crazy inspiration
I went into this project with the question: "How does Milton reconcile his pagan learning with his pious religious beliefs? Is this reconciliation satisfactory?" or is it bullcrap Milton feeds himself? xD

Page 1: That's a Milton quote. Because he is mad scholarly yo <3
The scene underneath are ruins from Rome I ghetto photoshopped together.

...but wait, what are those mysterious figures in the distance...?

Page 2: Oh look, it's Milton's early exposure to Mirth and Melancholy!
This will prefigure his struggle between pagan learning and religous piety.
Mirth and Melancholy are based off their depictions in "L'Allegro" and "Il Penseroso"

Oh, and yes, because I am a pompous artist, *yes* that would be Mirth in the self-citation pose.

Page 3: So we are in an idyllic pastoral scene, the early morning dawn.
Milton is weaving the ghetto laurel wreath, which will continue to symbolize his poetic identity for the rest of the narration; he then steps out into the sun, so we can see him.
Images are citations of moments and scenes in "Lycidas"

Page 4: Milton crowns himself with the laurel wreath, with sunbeam sort of going through it to also suggest divine authority. He then starts preaching to the sheep, because the *real* prophets are the poets. The institution of religion has stagnates, what what.

Ooo~ what is Milton conjuring in his hand xD ???

Page 5: The image he's conjured in the smoke is two females, representing christianity and paganism.
These are supposed to be Sabrina and the Lady from Milton's "Comus," which I interpreted as his first attempt to reconcile pagan and christianity, by making the pagan service the christian.
Then Milton goes and works for the gove for a few years.
But he eventually pops out back into the world of allegory~

And he's dressed as a prophet

Page 6: Suprise! He's in the Garden of Eden.
He sees the forbidden fruit of KNOWLEDGE, and he *plucks* it! How audacious!

Page 7: Milton eats the fruit, and pulls off the blindfold of temporal matters, but *surprise* he's blind now, but it is a prophetic blindness that will allow him to see the divine!
Once again he has the shepard's hook, because he is tending to his flock.

And then he sees God awalkin' through the garden...

Page 8: That is God's foot... just..dont ask. Long story.
So Milton loves God and wants to give him a hug! So he gets on his tippy toes.

Page 9: In the upper left hand inset, we see Milton writing, because he couldnt reach God on his tippy toes, so he has to write, make poetry to understand, get closer to God. But guess what Milton, religion says we're not *supposed* to understand the infinity of God. What kind of pagan sacrelegious pride are you sporting Milton...oh wait lolz ur "of Satan's Paty"
Blake was so right, but so wrong. Lol Romantic tendency to fudge things jsut a bit xD

So he's turned into Satan now -- sexy <3

Page 10: So, God disappears, and Milton (as Satan) is on the cliff alone with Christ.
The closest one can come to comprehemding God is through Christ.
This is based on the scene from the end of Paradise Regained

Here, instead of tempting Jesus, Milton begs for divine knowledge.

Page 11: Jesus comes over and says hi!
he tells Milton that he;s very cute and hard working, but that he shoudl chilll, because the only truth that he needs to concern himself with is that of faith, the enormity of God.

Milton's a little skeptical and Jesus tries to take away the laurel wreath...
Oh Noes Jesus! Not my poetic identity and earthly acheivements T_T

Page 12: Milton falling into endless perdition clutching his laurel wreath <3
...but *still* reaching for heaven! no really, i cans get into heavens? T_T

The end <3 kyaa. I know it seems ghetto, but a lot of work went into that
It was either this, or God/theSon by Lucifer porn. Seriously.
Buuut I pussied out on that... but one day maybe, because they are OTP T_T

More things to come. I'm feeling exhibitionist lately xD

"Is he happy in Hell?"

art, milton
