So my brother's surprise birthday party is tomorrow and I volunteered to make the cupcakes. I purchased this really cool cupcake book from Target recently and have been dying to try some of the designs within. They are super cute. So, I flipped through the book and decided on a very 'boy' design, sharks.
Some of the supplies needed for this shark art work: tweenkies (for the bodies of the sharks as they stick up out of the cupcakes), mini white powdered donuts (life preservers), red fruit by the foot (to become the little red lines on the life preservers and to be cut into mouth shapes for the sharks), mini chocolate chips (shark eyes), etc.
From my past baking/frosting experience, I knew that this endeavor would take a while, so I set aside all morning for it. Not enough time, as it turns out. I did get most of the shark cupcakes done (except for the little lines for gills) and I made the little life preservers, complete with red lines, but I still have to frost 30 ish cupcakes and apply the life preservers and put Swedish fish on some (the fish cupcakes).
When complete there should be about 13 of each: sharks, life preservers, blue waves with Swedish fish. I hope he likes them. It has been fun, and of course, a learning experience. I don't know if I would attempt the sharks again. Having something stick up off of the cupcake and lean to one side begs for problems.
I am not burnt on the entire book though and look forward to attempting new designs with my new found knowledge.
