This is in regards to the Alfonso Soriano deal we were talking about.
Soriano in 2005 with TEX: .268/.309/.512 in 637 AB
Soriano in 2006 with WSN: .277/.351/.560 in 647 AB
Wilkerson in 2005 with WSN: .248/.351/.405 in 565 AB
Wilkerson in 2006 with TEX: .222/.306/.422 in 320 AB
Kinsler in 2006 with TEX: .286/.347/.454 in 423 AB
I maintain that this was a good trade for Jon Daniels. Given that they had a young second baseman who could provide equivalent offense (to Soriano's 2005 stats) and improved defense, and that Soriano refused to move to the outfield, this actually looks like a great move. Daniels found someone willing not only to take on a challenge in Soriano's defense, but give up a good OBP guy as well. Just a Soriano-for-Kinsler switch would have been a nice deal, yet Daniels managed to get something useful in return.
Financially, it was a good deal as well. Soriano was due to make $10 million in 2006, while Wilkerson was due only $3.9 million, and Kinsler and Sledge league minimum. On paper, a Wilkerson-Kinsler-Sledge combo is better and cheaper than Soriano alone.
The trade turned out poorly because Soriano had his personal best year and Wilkerson had his personal worst, but Daniels could not have predicted that. Soriano's career bests in OBP and SLG are numbers which he likely will never repeat. This is why the Hendry is stupid, remember?
