Yesterday, birds and squirrels converged in the backyard. There were chickadees at the feeder (they prefer sunflowers to peanuts), blue jays at the bird bath, gray squirrels burying acorns in my tree mulch, and robins everywhere. Even though some of the robins and geese spend their winters in town, they all continue to gather in September to talk about the weather and the possibility of migration. The yellow jackets are dominating the hummingbird feeder.
A few weeks ago, I was walking down a dirt lane between tall cottonwoods. A cloud of monarchs spiraled up from the ground. They were flocking just like the birds. Speaking of birds, a female Yellow Warbler recently took a wrong turn and became trapped in our back porch. This little bouncing ember of glowing feathers was hard to capture and free from her prison. One wonders how many of these tiny sparks of life, capable of navigating the North American continent, meet their end in a mysterious maze of window screens.
May your flyway remain open to the winds of autumn.
