From
doctor_k_. This was kind of fun.
25 years ago I:
1. Moved to Australia with my family
2. Watched my first TV show for what I now recognise as the slash factor (
Battle of the Planets)
20 years ago I:
1. Became enamoured of The Professionals, which went on to become my first slash fandom
2. Read “Shogun” for three straight days in every spare moment at school
3. Had very long fingernails and a huge nail polish collection
15 years ago I:
1. Made up Bodie/Doyle h/c scenarios during uni lectures, never imagining that there was such a thing as slash or that anybody else did this
2. Spent the entire year jostling for one particular parking place with someone, but never met them
3. Decided to take a year off in the middle of my degree to study horse management at an agricultural college
10 years ago I:
1. Was transferred to cold Melbourne after a blissful year in sunny Brisbane
2. Started serial job-hopping under the guise of progressing my career
3. Bought the horse that led me to my current occupation
5 years ago I:
1. Rented 112 gorgeous acres in country NSW. I don’t expect to live anywhere as nice ever again.
2. Owned a small herd of cattle
3. Took my worst fall from a horse and stupidly refused to have stitches at the hospital, thereby ensuring that I would have a permanent dent in one leg
2 years ago I:
1. Was in full career change mode
2. Ran my first 10km race
3. Realised that "I can’t do x" generally means "I haven’t bothered to acquire the skills / fitness required to do x"
1 year ago I:
1. Bought my 10 acres
2. Picked up a whole bunch of new, enticing fandoms. Where had they been all my life??
3. Decided to leave the body of a dead animal to decompose naturally in my roof rather than go up there and remove it. This was a very, very bad call.
Today I:
1. Used my new ride-on mower for 4 hours and pulled weeds for 3 hours (firebreak inspections start tomorrow)
2. Tried yet again to fence off my best shade tree so my horses can’t eat the bark and kill it. So far it’s Horses = 4, Me = 0.
3. Took my Appaloosa for a bareback ride and read a ST:TOS story.
The West Australian had an interesting article on Friday about bisexual characters in current Hollywood movies. "No longer relegated to the outskirts of lower-than-low budget indie flicks, big-ticket films this year are matter-of-factly, with minimal judgment, exploring characters who... flit between men and women and women and men." It mentioned Kinsey, Stage Beauty, Head in the Clouds, A Home at the End of the World and Alexander. Unfortunately there's no online version.
And if you're in Australia: I recommend buying a box of Special K breakfast cereal or bars for the free Pilates DVD!
