Today at 2:30pm my new fannishness for Boston Legal reached the point where I was pretty sure that if I were to die today, my main regret in my final moments would be not having seen more episodes.
(
This might be too morbid for some people's taste, though I don't see it that way )
I don't so much use thinking of death to keep things in perspective (though sometimes I do, and when I do, I usually take it a step further and imagine the entire planet colliding with the sun!), as to prioritise: what do I want to do? Mostly I try to practise a fair amount of planning for the future and deferred gratification. However, when something reaches that level of "I hope I don't die before I get to...", which is pretty unusual, then I go out and do it right away. I actually think that's very sound policy - the potentially strange part is just the things that trigger that feeling! (I'm in no way saying that watching old DVDs is the most important thing in my life, but it can be the thing that feels most incomplete to me at a particular time, and that it does actually mean that much to me sometimes to see them!)
Also, I quite like to think about death as a bit of an intellectual exercise and a test of equanimity or character or something.
On a fannish note, I clearly remember as a teen fervently hoping that I wouldn't die before The Empire Strikes Back was released!
I was the same before The Return of the King came out, and to a lesser extent before HP Book 7 was released. I definitely felt bad for all the fans who had to die before those events!
I happened to go window-shopping in JB Hi-Fi last week and I knew they had the box set (at least, they had one of them last week - there was some worry involved yesterday!), but at that time things hadn't reached critical levels. In fact, I had a conversation with sarren and Jody on Friday night about my plans for its possible acquisition and the likelihood of the seasons going on sale over the next few months. However, four days later, my priorities had changed and the price seemed completely reasonable! (It's fun to change the rules!)
Cheers. You have a nice day over there! I have most of the day off, and guess what I'll be doing.

I totally understand what you mean when you talk about deferred gratification versus "I need to see/do this now".
I, too, tend to wait for DVDs to be on sale before I buy them, but when it comes to things that I'm crazy in love with, full price is still excellent value for the pleasure it will bring me!
