House recs, and Fry and Laurie on religion

My week has been thoroughly punctuated by House.

I discovered a vid on Sunday that I pretty much watched on and off all day: Slow Show by isaytoodlepip (unfortunately only YouTube quality). I love the song, especially the final third of it. "You know I dreamed about you...for 29 years before I found you." That would just about work with their canon timeline as per episode 5.04, too. I'm a sucker for a deep voice like this. Another rec from the same vidder: This Year's Love, which looks at House's relationships with Wilson, Cuddy, Cameron, Chase and Stacy.

I also read a bunch of stories on a challenge community.  Most of them were enjoyable but not memorable, and I didn't leave many comments or save them to my computer. But driving into the city Monday night, I found a couple of lines from one of them stuck in my mind on replay. Clearly it was necessary to find the story they came from! It could have been any of about 50 stories, so when I got home again on Wednesday I started at the top of my Monday browsing history and worked down until I found it.

House was a little irritated by Wilson's confidence. 'You seem very sure of yourself.'

'Well, maybe it's time to remind you why,' Wilson replied...

Mmm. (I'm not so much reccing the story, Branding by hwshipper, since the author writes in a universe where H/W has been ongoing throughout their other relationships and that's not my preferred vision, but those lines really do it for me!)

Tuesday night, staying in the city at my mother's, I saw cesperanza's post about Fanlore, looked at the House entries and saw mention of house_bigbang, a challenge for stories longer than 20,000 words. What a great idea! There I found The Open Road by pun, a road trip story based on Jenn's Smallville classic Sleep While You Drive. That sounded terrific, and it was. H/W, 25,000 words.

bardiegrub suggested I check out some Fry & Laurie, and that led me to this video where they (mostly Fry) are interviewed about their views on religion and new age theories. Obviously this isn't going to be to everybody's taste!

Fry: "My spleen isn't really big enough to explode with all the splenetic juices of fury that drive me when I consider this, but the real key word that triggers my rage is the word energy...when people start talking about it in terms of negative or positive types. What are you talking about? What do you mean? ... It's covering up such woolly thinking, such pathetic nonsense."

(He feels angry at) "...horoscopes, crystals...the whole culture of searching for answers. As someone brought up in an unashamed Western tradition of music and poetry and philosophy, all those answers are there in the work that has been done by humanity before us, in literature, in art, in science."

The most entertaining bits are in the first two minutes, and then again from 7 minutes. This sort of thing fills me with enthusiasm for the British. Where are the Americans and Australians like this?

(Which reminds me, I'm pleased about the US election result like almost everyone else, but Obama's acceptance speech still made me cringe. Dare I hope that in my lifetime there will be a president who doesn't say "God bless you"?)
