Getting used to this full-time working business again

Aug 13, 2006 19:36

I think that was my first 55-hour work-week in over five years. I used to do this all the time! Life's suddenly got so much busier that I was starting to complain to myself it wasn't much fun, but then I took stock and decided that wasn't true.

Wednesday night I hosted the weekly meeting of the Deadwood Sub-Committee of the local slash group. Thursday I took philosophy classes at university. Friday I worked on a multi-national accounting consolidation in an upmarket riverside office, emailing to and fro with my counterpart in Sweden. Saturday I trimmed six horses, witnessed a chicken massacre by Client 1's formerly-reliable dog and played with a tame kangaroo at Client 2's, before launching an attack on poisonous weeds at my property in the afternoon. Today I ran sixteen kilometres and went to a book launch.

It sounds OK, put like that. Quite good, in fact.

At said book launch, where she waxed lyrical about laney_cairo's novelette Undercover Blues, cupidsbow and I discussed when the term "middle-aged" applies. What's your view?

And a quote meme from malnpudl:

Go here and look through random quotes until you find five that you think reflect who you are or what you believe.

Our lives improve only when we take chances - and the first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves. Walter Anderson

To avoid situations in which you might make mistakes may be the biggest mistake of all. Peter McWilliams

As I see it, every day you do one of two things: build health or produce disease in yourself. Adelle Davis

Don't use words too big for the subject. Don't say 'infinitely' when you mean 'very'; otherwise you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. C. S. Lewis

We should be taught not to wait for inspiration to start a thing. Action always generates inspiration. Inspiration seldom generates action. Frank Tibolt
