Off to New Zealand

Feb 09, 2006 19:54

I'm off to New Zealand for work tomorrow morning.  Not, unfortunately, the all-expenses-paid kind of work trip, but rather the painful pay-for-everything-yourself self-employment kind of trip.  I'd been mostly thinking of it as an expensive hassle until I did a search for information on the town I'm going to (Te Aroha, pretty name!) and learned it ( Read more... )

Thanks. It's supposed to be hot here, so it's a good time to get away!

One of my cousins is named Aroha.

I always rather fancied it for myself. Along with Katherine. Then I'd be Aroha Katherine and that would make me very happy indeed.

Will it be courses non-stop, or will you have a chance to do some sightseeing? I think Wairere Falls is near there?

::ignores your weird name fetish:: *g*

I have a couple of days to look around at the end. Have just glanced at the guidebook and can't see Wairere Falls; will read it properly on the plane tomorrow. Where's your family from?

My family's from all over the North Island - no-one living in the South Island.

My great-aunt Jane lives in Rotorua (I always liked her because she used to get my name right and my brother's name wrong and all our other extended relatives always remembered him and called me 'Marie'). When great-uncle Robert was alive we used to stopover in Rotorua all the time on our way down to, or back from Wellington.

My Mum lived in Rotorua until she was about 13 as well.

Te Aroha is a nice day-trip away.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion about Wairere Falls. It stays light long enough that I had time to go there and do the walk to the top after the end of Sunday's seminar. Gorgeous (and great exercise)!

I want to go to New Zealand with you and lounge in hot springs. And take pictures.

::off to the airport:: You can only come with me if you can find your swimming gear.

Have fun in NZ. Make sure you so get to play as well and that it's not all work. You deserve a break.

I did fit some play in. Black-water rafting = very playful!

Have a great time.

BTW, I totally recommend the hot springs in Rotorua. Especially at night. It's got an open roof and you can watch the stars as you get nice and toasty in the springs. It was one of the many highlights of our trip there. (Darn, now I want to go back to NZ.)

I was planning to, but didn't end up doing that, only because I'd already spent so much money going to the thermal parks (three in one day!). I did soak in the pools at Te Aroha. Did you go to both the North and South Islands? I've only been to the North, twice now.

At least you did get to soak in pools.

We got to both the North and South Islands. The west coast of the South Island is unbelievably beautiful, and when we go back (we totally plan on going back some day) we want to spend a lot more time there.
