For reasons of distance, I might not be able to pull my weight in the brainwashing eduction of
psycho_tabby, so I thought I'd put in a plug for my fandoms.
In order of discovery, I present:
1. The Professionals Bodie/Doyle
The fandom I grew up with. My parents watched the show in the early 80's and I never got it out of my head after that. It was responsible for my to-this-day overwhelming preference for long curly hair on men. The show was one of the first things I looked up on the internet when I first started to use it in 1996. The slash came a year later!
2. Battlestar Galactica Starbuck/Apollo
It may be hopelessly uncool to like BG but that's not going to stop me. Another show I grew up with. I don't read much in this fandom, but it's close to my heart.
3. LOTR
I like Legolas/Aragorn, though must say I haven't read any since being introduced to all the riches below. The immortality concept fascinates me.
4. Highlander Duncan/Methos
If I had to choose just one fandom to take with me into exile, I think this would be it. The immortality concept. The swords (is there any finer sight in television than either Duncan or Methos raising a sword?). The feeling each other's presence. The imperative to be good enough to win, or die. In all my other fandoms I'm primarily interested in the relationship. In this one, I'm also fascinated by the mythology. What would it be like to see civilisations come and go? To have to fight and kill to stay alive? To have the possibility of a relationship enduring forever?
My first comment on seeing Duncan in songvids was "Too heavy-set, not attractive". I hang my head in shame.
5. due South Fraser/RayK
I fell hard for this one, after making the same kind of comment about Fraser that I did about Duncan. Wonderful, wonderful relationship material and absolutely superlative writers.
6. The Sentinel Jim/Blair
My initial comment here was "Too much of a height difference!" Somebody take me out and shoot me. Actually, I've become much more circumspect since then - has anybody heard me say anything negative about Stargate? Or Enterprise? Or even RPS? I'm learning.
Sentinel was my waiting-in-the-wings fandom for ages before occupying centre stage in the last month. Jim is not really my type, but Blair has the irresistable long curly hair. And the height and age difference? Not a problem.
