It would be so much easier if I could use the phrase "new fandom" to explain to the world at large why I've been a little preoccupied these past few weeks.
My mother: How do you go getting those quotes from the fencing contractor?
Me: Haven't called him. I was hit with a new fandom!
Client: I've been trying to phone you every night and your line's always busy.
Me: Sorry, new fandom! Try my mobile.
Local trainer: I thought you were going to call me and we were going to ride out this week?
Me: Couldn't make it, sorry, new fandom!
Colleague at the contract accounting job: You look kind of tired...
Me: New fandom!
Colleague: ...but why do you keep grinning like that?
Me: (beams) New fandom!
Then there's the internal dialogue. Thursday morning, 4:45 am, after going to bed at 1 am:
New-fandom-insane, but energised, self: Hey, I'm awake! Let's go watch an episode or read some fanfic!
Rational, responsible self: Are you crazy? Go back to sleep, right now!
Insane self: No, I can't. Let's make use of this free time!
Rational self: Watch TV or turn on the computer at 5 am?? I don't think so.
Insane self: Come on, come on!
Rational self: You do realise that we have three hours of driving and about seven hours of hard manual labour on the agenda for today?
Insane self: Eh, I'll be fine.
Rational self: (wavering) I don't want to hear any complaints from you this afternoon about how tired you are. None, got that?
New fandom... there's nothing quite like it.
