Supernatural - early days

I love the moment when I realise I need to make a new folder under "Slash" on my computer. Once there were two...now there are 32.

sarren took me on a guided tour into Special Hell last night, supervising my viewing of the pilot, before we jumped forward to 4x3 (because I want to be able to share in her Dean/Castiel obsession a little while she has time to indulge in it). Those turned out to be excellent episodes to watch back to back, since Mary saying to Dean in 4x3 that she wanted a "safe" life echoed Sam saying the same thing in the pilot.

So far I'm coping better than expected with the scary stuff. I cannot watch and never want to be able to watch things like the torture scenes in Rome, but when there are supernatural forces at work it doesn't seem so real. I'd been rewatching some X-Files over the past few weeks and maybe that's helped prepare me, too. I didn't know at the time that I was in training for a new fandom, but it seems to have been fortuitous.

I wasn't thrilled with the pilot - Sam seemed to be carving a nice life out for himself and Dean didn't respect that at all. I went from rewatching it this evening to reading a story in which Sam said "We’ve lived in each other’s pockets our whole lives", and I immediately thought that wasn't true - what about his years at Stanford, when apparently they hardly spoke? However, I've liked just about everything else I've seen so far!

I've never timed the onset of a new fandom, much less such a large fandom, quite so badly before (or maybe once, in 2004, when I read Sentinel fanfic all winter instead of planting trees). Tomorrow's the end of the financial year and the next three months are my busiest time, not only with accounting work but also with winter/spring outdoor work around my place. On the bright side, the new-fandom high may go a long way towards offsetting any stress caused by work deadlines and sleep deprivation. I've been in a relentlessly, unshakeably good mood since Sunday! If you could bottle and sell a new-fandom high you'd make millions.
