I DID A CUTE THING but I've stocked up SO MANY stupid Larrykabu comics that it'll be a while before I post it in other places BUT I CAN POST IT HERE

I HOPE THAT WORKS if not you can see it on Dreamwidth, but anyway I saw this meme and I couldn't resist IT JUST SEEMED SO PERFECT FOR THEM. This is the first time I've seen this meme actually! I went and looked it up and found a full version, and a few cute variations of it. Maybe I've just been out of the loop...

Anyway I drew the frames at what I thought was BIG size but it actually still is kind of small lol. I hope the text is readable! The frames go by so fast - one of the reasons I decided to do this meme was because it was such a short thing, only like ten seconds, haha. Did it all in one night because I HAVE A PROBLEM. I used Flash to time it mostly and plan out the poses, then drew them entirely in Sai. I THOUGHT about a brief animation for the "eh?!" or "ah!" bits, but they flash by SO fast I figured it probably wasn't worth it.

I do like this face but I liked the sketch of it more actually, where is it.

I always feel like my eyes look better without whites... particularly shaped ones like Kabu's. Ah well.

Kabu regained his equilibrium by now, haha.

REALLY NOW I'M EMBARRASSED FOR YOU INSTEAD

I originally had this at a full-size body shot but it was hard to fit them both into such a narrow space and it wasn't as clear what Larry was doing so I pulled it out to chibi size.

oh that goofy salaryman of mine. patpat.

THIS IS SO CUTE I KEEP WATCHING IT OVER AND OVER i swear to god i'm clawing at the walls about these two right now WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME

I mentioned before that in the Japanese ranking for the Pokemon Masters little scenarios, Larry and Kabu's ranked fifth. Since then they released the overseas rankings and Larry and Kabu's is THIRD!! EVEN HIGHER the japanese side of the fandom was quite excited, haha. One artist I saw tweeted something like "aokabu, expand overseas..."

I do tag my stuff with the Japanese tag for kaBLARRY which is aokabu (Aoki/Kabu), but I wonder if I'm doing a faux pas since my comics are in english! I see Japanese artists still liking or retweeting them though... I use google translate to read a lot of comics/fic in other languages, I wonder if people do that with mine? I feel so nervous commenting on their art when I don't speak their language, haha. I usually just use emojis to try and make sure I don't say anything dumb, but the last few times I've done that they're replied back to me in English! I keep forgetting there's a good chance a lot of Japanese artists know a few words in English... still! Feel tentative reaching out, haha.

One of the big Japanese artists on the aokabu side has arranged a little web-only convention in December and is always a big promoter of other people's work and stuff, they're so excited! They made a meme template because they wanted to know how other people saw Larry and Kabu's relationship and why they liked it and that kind of thing. I'm tempted to fill it out, but I wonder if that'd be weird to do it in English! I don't want to use google translate for something with that many words, haha. I mean, if I made a meme like that I'd be excited if anyone filled it out, whether they spoke english or not. But that's just me! Maybe it'd be weird? I did ask them once if it was okay for an overseas artist to participate in a little twitter tag thing they did but they never got back to me! Maybe they missed the message but I dunno... aaaah social interactions through a language barrier can be so hard! I don't want to weird anyone out!! I just hunger for more Larrykabu like I'm dying, what can I do...

Another interesting thing I saw was an artist wondering in Korean about what characters were like in other languages, but lamenting that google translate flattens everyone out into the same basic voice. I FEEL YOUR PAIN, I WANT TO KNOW THESE KIND OF THINGS TOO
One of the little nuances that gets lost between Japanese and English is that Kabu uses boku as his personal pronoun, which has a kind of gentle, boyish feel to it. He also uses kai a lot at the end of his questions, which is also a softer male addition. It gives Kabu a soft vibe in Japanese in spite of his fiery personality! But there's no real way to convey that in English as easily... I've seen Japanese artists describe Kabu as moe lol which does seem to fit.
Larry's pronoun instead is jibun which is a bit unusual, Mato says it's mostly used in kind of business-y contexts which makes sense, haha. Kabu calls Larry Aoki-kun, but to be fair it seems like Kabu uses -kun with EVERYone so that doesn't seem super significant. Larry just calls him Kabu-san. :B Larry seems to have a very soft voice in Japanese which is cute! Apparently he's so quiet he had trouble getting the waiter's attention to order more food. Adorable.
