And yeah, I do honestly know what you mean about having a loose mental image, but not being able to pin down what it should look like until you have it down on a page. (and sometimes not even then just ARRGH WHY CAN'T I GET THIS TO LOOK LIKE MY VAGUE MENTAL IMPRESSION UGH.)
