To jump to Real life for a second, Egypt re-writes the story book on this one. Hatshepsut imprisoned the next in line for the throne (possibly while Regent, I forget) because she thought he'd be an awful awful King, and ruled Egypt for like 15-20 years. History generally agrees that she was a pretty good Queen. Then the guy she imprisoned takes the throne...and is a pretty good king.
Yeah, it's like "I got her half of the story and RE-WROTE EVERYTHING BECAUSE SHE HAS NO IDEA HOW TO WRITE GOD. WHAT'S WITH HER TRYING TO BE IMPORTANT NOW SHE'S OVER 18. CAN'T YOU SEE SHE'S THE ANTAGONIST IN MY STORY (I may have added some parts for dramatic effect)
Hmmmm...I was about to say that good old Queen Elizabeth would have had a thing or two to say about this, too, but given that she spent most of her reign alternatively apologizing for and rejecting her femininity...yeah. Her whole schtick was something like "I may have the weak body of a female, but I have the heart of a MAN

I don't know how professional collabs work either but just from doing fan collabs it seems in poor taste to just diss your collaborater publically like that for sucking. SEEMS A BIT TACKY IS ALL
ooo from glancing at the back of the book to see how long it is, I caught a glimpse of sections that might be about what each of them thought/contributed to the book. :O WE MAY KNOW HOW LACKEY FEELS ABOUT ALL THIS YET
And the thing that kills me is that he'd probably claim that it was all ok, cause he never named her by name (even though it wasn't a mystery who he was talking about), and he was REALLY mostly bitching about the publisher (even though he started out by calling her work crap) and...yeah. STAY CLASSY, DUDE.
It also bugs me because Mercedes Lackey, for all of her shortcomings as an author, she is at least self aware enough to acknowledge them. She actually wrote this short story where she spends the entire time making fun of her more mockable tendencies, and taking pot shots at things like how angsty some of her characters are. XD

haha I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT LACKEY'S WORK but that'd be hilarious if that was the case. I think it's kind of weird he didn't talk about Lackey by name either. WHY BE SO VAGUE?
My vague memories of this book are sort of coming back, and i THINK the big twist will be that Faro will eventually learn how to do magic too OH BOY but I could be wrong
The princess/queen thing is interesting and so pervasive. :O I think another reason princesses show up more than Queens is that that way they aren't REALLY in power, there's always a king somewhere in the background who's REALLY in charge, and if they're princesses, that means they're available for romancin. With a Queen there's probably going to be a King, but Princesses are available for marrying and making a dude a King like THINGS SHOULD BE i'm tired this probably doesn't make sense
Or Queens are too busy being Queens to bother with all that romancin.. Queen Elizabeth I did the whole virgin queen thing too, and I dont think that helped the idea. Since heaven forbid a woman who can get by without a MAN,
Of course Queen Victoria oversaw the whole Industrial Revolution and made the UK the first global empire (since neither Rome nor Alexander nor Ghengis had bits in the Americas)
And lets not forget that the UK and her Commonwealth are still ruled by QUEEN Elizabeth II (the next monarch likely to be King Harry - might even be Harry I, I dunno the past monarchs well enough to be sure.)
