I blame being swedish! We pretty much have no words where you blend two different vocals so if I haven't heard the correct pronounciation, I separate them. And since we've had the game since I was little, it's gotten ingrained as Ah-eeh-ris. (I once tried to pronounce the name Aeolus, it did not go well.)
Wow. According to the answers of the polls, I'm doing it wrong. :P Though I say Aerith like "air-ith" like they do in Kingdom Hearts, Aeris reads like an entirely different pronunciation for me, so I say it like the Zodiac sign. I DON'T EVEN KNOW MAN.
sorry man The friend who loaned me the game (and system, for that matter) woulda killed me otherwise and it just kinda stuck I'm a victim of Circumstances
When I played, I did it by swapping my N64 and games for my friend's PSX and games for a summer--I got the Final Fantasy run, she got the Zelda run. However, she was one of those people who is INTENSELY into FFVII and knew all the Japanese-correct pronunciations despite it being 2000, and I wanted to make her happy so I adopted all of them--Aerith, Yoofie, the lot. I feel kind of like a dick for it sometimes, but they're not my favorite characters anyway (B AND C PICK B AND C) and I'm probably more of a dick for going "VINCENTO/SHIDO" in my head sometimes so there you are

APPARENTLY or tss-ung or something I really can't say it right they gave us character blood types in the manual but they didn't give us a pronunciation guide what is this* Also Zidane from FFIX is pronounced Zih-dane (as in Great Dane) and not Zih-dah-ne, because it's French. This wouldn't bother me so much if I hadn't had a long-running argument with a kid in school whose mother (the English teacher) said there was no reason to pronounce it Zih-dah-ne in English. IT'S A JAPANESE GAME but apparently I was wrong for the wrong reasons aaaaargh

Zidane's Japanese name is "Jitan" and is pronounced zih-dahn --- as a French person would. :) The name that gets ME, though, is Cyan. One of my favourites in 6, but I boggle at how they got Cyan out of Kaien / Cayenne. I blame Kain. Or Cain. Or Butz, who is and is not Bartz (because Bartz is a half-ogre in Dragon Force 2.)
