When I played, I did it by swapping my N64 and games for my friend's PSX and games for a summer--I got the Final Fantasy run, she got the Zelda run. However, she was one of those people who is INTENSELY into FFVII and knew all the Japanese-correct pronunciations despite it being 2000, and I wanted to make her happy so I adopted all of them--Aerith, Yoofie, the lot. I feel kind of like a dick for it sometimes, but they're not my favorite characters anyway (B AND C PICK B AND C) and I'm probably more of a dick for going "VINCENTO/SHIDO" in my head sometimes so there you are.

Also, you missed one. For years I thought it was Tuh-sehng. I still trip over the "Zung" pronunciation.

Also I really accept all comers when it comes to FFVII pronunciation but will shiv bitches when it comes to FFVI
which is sad because in THAT case I grew up with the English bastardizations
"STRAGOS" JUST MAKES ME NERVOUS OKAY THERE AREN'T ENOUGH LETTER SPACES FOR THAT

Addendum: Actually, that last part probably has more to do with my frothing-at-the-mouth loathing of the FFVI Advance translation, so maybe it's just residual hate there
God what'd they do to you and your complex characters FFVI

APPARENTLY or tss-ung or something I really can't say it right
they gave us character blood types in the manual but they didn't give us a pronunciation guide what is this*
Also Zidane from FFIX is pronounced Zih-dane (as in Great Dane) and not Zih-dah-ne, because it's French. This wouldn't bother me so much if I hadn't had a long-running argument with a kid in school whose mother (the English teacher) said there was no reason to pronounce it Zih-dah-ne in English. IT'S A JAPANESE GAME but apparently I was wrong for the wrong reasons aaaaargh

Ugh, where to even start. Okay, there are a few things I liked, a few really unclear/weird things that I can't recall at the moment that were cleared up by the new translation, but they...did a number on some of the characters.

ORIGINAL:
Setzer: Phew...the Empire's made me a rich man...
Celes: Stop thinking of yourself! Many towns and villages have been smashed by the Empire!
Me: Oh Setzer, you're so morally ambiguous and that makes me feel funny for reasons I don't understand because I'm ten years old!

ADVANCE:
Setzer: Hmmm...Business has been awfully slow lately, thanks to the Empire...
Celes: You're not the only one suffering.
Me: That...that's the opposite of what you're supposed to say. You're supposed to join the Returners despite financial gain on a romantic whim and a tossed coin. You're not. Why are you not. ...Setzer? Is Celes patting you on the got-dang HAND? What's going on?

ORIGINAL:
Kefka: B... Blood!? You...vicious brat! Grrr...Aargh...I hate hate hate hate hate hate...hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate HATE YOU! Grrr...
Me: This. Is the greatest thing. In the history of the world.

ADVANCE:
Me: OH BOY HERE IT COMES 8D 8) 8B
Kefka: B-blood... Blood! Blood!!!
You vicious brat!
Argh... Grrr...!
You know, you really are a stupid...
Vicious...
Arrogant, whiny, pampered, backstabbing, worthless...
LITTLE BRAT!
Me: 8|

*TABLE FLIP*

Those are the main two I can think of off the top of my head, but I was actually planning on reading side-by-side LPs (I've been on a real LP kick lately) and seeing exactly how they stack up. I know I went through FFVIA tearing out my hair, but I've blocked out a lot of the why--mainly I'm scarred over them turning Setzer into Vincent a non-complex flowery-talkin' dipstick and screwing with classic lines, but of course that would be what would stick out in my head the most. I was thoroughly fed up with the game by the time I finished, and I am actually kind of dreading remembering why.

Edit: also they changed "Chupon" into "Typhon" why would you even do that
if you're going to mess with one of the classic character's names to make it make kind of sense at least SPELL IT RIGHT
(at least I assume "Typhon" = "Typhoon" = Sneeze attack which they changed into Snort and aaaaargh IT'S STARTING TO COME BACK TO ME)

*yes I know it's a Japanese thing shhhhh

Zidane's Japanese name is "Jitan" and is pronounced zih-dahn --- as a French person would. :) The name that gets ME, though, is Cyan. One of my favourites in 6, but I boggle at how they got Cyan out of Kaien / Cayenne. I blame Kain. Or Cain. Or Butz, who is and is not Bartz (because Bartz is a half-ogre in Dragon Force 2.)

Oh, the tangled webs.

Yes, that. Is what I meant. Kind of. I was less-informed on it, but that.

I dunno, maybe because Cyan sounds kind of old-timey and Cayenne is like pepper and Cyan and pepper don't really relate to each other? Kaien would have worked really well, though. We'd just be arguing in a separate poll about how to pronounce it.

God, when I think about it the FF games are LITTERED with this shit. Sell-es or Sealies for Celes. Nye-bell-hime or Nee-bel-heim. Probably like ALL of the enemies. And by the time they started having voice actors, they were using easy two-syllable names like Wakka and Lulu. If there's a single physical way to mispronounce "Lulu", I'd like to hear it.

I swear Square did this just to fuck with us.

The hands of the mighty god were strong in any undertaking and his feet were weariless. From the shoulders of this frightening dragon a hundred snake heads grew, flickering their dark tongues; fire blazed from the eyes under the brows of all the dreadful heads, and the flames burned as he glared. In all the terrible heads voices emitted all kinds of amazing sounds; for at one time he spoke so that the gods understood, at another his cries were those of a proud bull bellowing in his invincible might; sometimes he produced the pitiless roars of a courageous lion, or again his yelps were like those of puppies, wondrous to hear, or at another time he would hiss; and the great mountains resounded in echo

I'm going to agree with your agreement. That is some high-grade research, though, and highly appreciated! I love this stuff, seriously.
also that is probably the best argument for the SNES translation, I am sticking with that from now on, thank you

also, best guess is WE'VE SHOEHORNED GOD NAMES ONTO EVERYTHING ELSE WHY NOT THIS
BECAUSE CHUPON IS THE ULTIMATE GIRAFARIG NAME, THAT'S WHY
(no offense to you and yours, Zar)

Man Cyan, that name drove me crazy as a kid. That and Celes. I think I flipped back and forth between a hard C and a soft C, so it was Sai-an and Kai-an, or See-lees or Kehlees.

Typhon is a thing. as I recall it's an egyptian god of something. it's totally a word though. But for a wind attack WHY WOULD YOU GO TYPHON AND NOT GO HEY, WE CAN ADD AN EXTRA O AND GET TYPHOON

Didn't Ceres suffer Chickification in FFVIA too? (The scene where we meet her, where she was being tortured by the guards) Either way, thanks for warning me about the characterization issues and the mangling of classic lines in FFVIA. I know which version of FFVI I won't be playing.

oh hell yes I forgot about that, lemme see if I can turn it up

"Depending on whether you're playing the SNES or GBA version, this young lady is either getting the crud beaten out of her or just getting yelled at from across the room."

which you could almost understand as a tweak except in BOTH games...

Celes (Original): Thanks, but no thanks. I can barely walk.
Celes (Advance): ...No. I can barely walk. I'd never make it out of here.

...effectively transforming her from a tough-as-nails general into an opera floozy delicate flower whose knees break if you yell at her. gg team, gg

OH DANG SO I SAID ZIDANE RIGHT ALL THIS TIME hahaha i've always done it zih-dayne, which really threw me off when that one soccer player headbutted that guy and everyone was talking about him and pronouncing the name totally differently. :B

haha I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL sometimes for me the slightly-off/creative translation can really add something. I KNOW WOOLSEY GOT A BIT CRAZY HERE AND THERE BUT I LIKED WHAT HE DID MAN
