~Fun with King's Quest I - The Magic Shield

Feb 18, 2006 05:08

I apparently have brain damage or something because I'm working on another flash video. This one, however, is much shorter and has no furries and is about a billion times better than my other two already. I should have it done pretty soon because I've hit my fanatical THIS IS THE ONLY THING I WANT TO WORK ON ARRRRGH phase. GOOD TIMES.

Darn it my computer keeps occasionally making this weird whirring noise...not exactly like the fan is struggling but it's not good. It's not a healthy noise, but the thing is that it just happens occasionally then it goes back to normal. I checked it out and it seems like it's coming from the power supply which doesn't make sense cause I just replaced it. Weird. I hope it's nothing serious.

ANYWAY.
Previous editions for those just tuning in.

Alright, let's get outta here.

Here we go. There are like...three or four screens of these horrible winding stairs. If you fall off you die. This is the alternate path up to the giant. You know who shows up here randomely? The dwarf. Guess what, you can't run away from him here either because you usually die if you do. If he shows up you are basically screwed. I HATE THAT DWARF SO MUCH ARRRGH I hate these stairs. The mouse makes it a bit easier.

It goes on and on and on. King's Quest games have an obsession with stairs.

Still going.

Actually that was the last screen. Then you just walk through the door and run before a wolf gets you.

Get my FRIGGING point.

Back here again! Let's see...

heh, the text box is kind of obscuring the condor here. It's there, I assure you.

Missed!

There we go.

THANKS FOR THE RIDE, SUCKER
So hey, doesn't this look like you're supposed to go down that hole? You are. But you better not do it unless you check to the left first foooor

The mushroom! If you don't know to go look for it and you fall down tha hole, you hit a deadend and die. You NEED the mushroom. I screwed this up once and forgot about the mushroom and went down the hole and saved and ended having to backtrack. It's really, REALLY irritating.

Picky picky.

There we go.

Okay, NOW let's go down.

Graham SHAKES IT OFF

That looks like fun doesn't it?

I think you can also give the treasures to the rat. I can't remember. Like the gold egg and stuff.

This is another one of those "stand on the exact right pixel or the rat will rip the flesh off your bones" kind of things.

IT TOLD ME TO

Those are leprechauns. There are two ways to do this, if I remember right. I think my four leaf clover protects me from them, so they won't mess with me, but if you do that I'm not sure how you get the Shield and such. SO I'm just gonna do it the standard way.

Graham: :D

Okay, I'll take your word for it.

Graham played the fiddle for a good chunk of time after the guard's were gone. Okay Graham whatever.

Is the king wearing a dress?

Points!

DARN IT

dun da da duuuun

Tiny hole. How on earth will Graham fit through there?

Did that make sense to you? Is that what you would have thought of? ALICE IN WONDERLAND RANDOM REFERENCE

You can still die at this point, by the way.

You can, in fact, walk right into the moat here and die with all three treasures on you.

HAHAHA HE'S DYING OF SAD
You know, if Graham failed, would he have been blamed for the King's Death? That doctor sounds kind of accusatory.

GASP

Except for when the dragon came in KQ3 but you know

Seven of them, in fact. I don't count Mask of Eternity because that game was horrible and a disgrace to King's Quest. THERE WERE ONLY SEVEN KING'S QUESTS PERIOD.

Not really, because the year after this I believe they released KQ2. Haha.

If you pay attention to the credits on most Sierra games, you'll notice that there's a lot of overlap. Sierra was a small company back then and people would routinely work on five or six games at once. I think one of the Guys from Andromeda was doing ALL the art for Leisure Suit Larry 1, Police Quest 1, and Space Quest 1 at the same time.

Haha, thou.

Are you surprised at how short the game was? Keep in mind the original was 256k. It is fairly short though I must admit. A lot of early Sierra games are.

My thoughts? KQ1 isn't my favorite King's Quest, but it's still pretty fun. It's more fun than the nightmare of KQ2 that's for sure. Ugh.
Good stuff tho. You should give it a try.
Oh, I forgot to mention this earlier. There's a really dedicated group of fans who used to go by Tierra but now go by AGD Interactive I think who are working on super enhanced-remakes of old Sierra games. They did a REALLY nice version of KQ1 and 2 (I vastly prefer their version of 2 because seriously, KQ2 was the weakest in the KQ series by far) and are working on Quest for Glory 2, which I'm sure will be great. I recommend checking out their stuff. If a parser interface scares you THAT much, then the AGD remake will be right up yer alley. Icons and everything!
