#2 in a presumed series

I've procrastinated long enough, let's bust out another one of these things.

I think a few people enjoyed my previous post of this nature, when I presented an audience recording of the complete performance of "Billy the Mountain" from the 1971 UCLA concert that produced Just Another Band From L.A. I mean, there were only two comments, but I imagine more than two people downloaded it. At any rate, here's a different sort of live gem for you.

If you've heard the Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar album, you'll recognize the vamp here as "Variations on the Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progressions". Which also means, depending on your level of Zappa knowledge, you may be able to identify the fact that this guitar solo is extracted from "City of Tiny Lites". This comes from a soundboard recording of 10/17/80 Dallas, TX and features a surprise performance of Some Other Song near the end of the solo. Listen for it and leave a comment if you know what it is.

The fall 1980 tour was a killer one for guitar solos, the Shut Up album(s) are proof enough of that, but the circulating unofficial live recordings provide plenty more thrilling proof. This is one of my favorite solos ever and is, at least for this reporter's tastes, arguably better than the similar "Santana" solo on the aforementioned album-full-of-guitar-solos.

Hope you enjoy this one. Comment and I may be inspired to share more in the future.
Here's the download link: Frank Zappa - Carlos Goes to Dallas.
