politics in this country are just too depressing.
every little thing anyone (i.e. President Obama) says is picked on by crazy people (i.e. Republicans).
Obama's comment about Las Vegas, for example, made perfect sense. It wasn't at all meant to be a negative comment about the city, just a point that you wouldn't go gambling or spending a lot of money on entertainment if you're on a tight budget.
He could just as easily have said "You're not going to go to Disneyworld" or "You aren't going to go buy an iPad" and then Disney and Apple would have been upset over it.
The point is the same, though. He was just using one specific example of an irresponsible way to spend money on a tight budget, where you would have other priorities.
And this seems to be true of everything in politics these days.
I think part of the blame belongs on the mainstream media for blowing everything out of proportion, but a lot of it also lies with opportunistic and/or insane politicians who are clearly not trying to solve any problems in Washington, but just trying to tear each other down.
Obama can try all he wants for bipartisanship and a different tone, but if no one else is willing to cooperate, any effort he makes seems pointless.
