oh HELL no.

I just found an interesting interview with JKR. If by 'interesting' I mean 'irritating'. She revealed some interesting facts about HP&tDH.

So, remember how she said one character survived who was slated to die, but at the cost of two who were supposed to live?

Guess who the two were who were originally supposed to survive?

Yup, Lupin and Tonks. So now it seems really really obvious that their deaths were an afterthought, just thrown in to say "Whoops, more people died!" I admit, I am a little surprised Lupin was originally supposed to live at all. It seemed like he would always have been destined to rejoin his best friends at the end of the series.

Of course, this is not to say Mr Weasley's death (he was the one she spared) wouldn't have upset me instead, but maybe it would have been better written? Maybe we would have seen it happen rather than just "Oh, look, he's dead now." But still.

I'm not going to let it diminish my overall enjoyment of the book, because I did think it was mostly very good. But I think this aspect of it was very weak. Almost as weak as the epilogue.

On the other hand, by revealing her change of mind there, she's opened up the door to some very specific near-canon alternate endings from, well, us. :)

But ... yeah.
