For Whom the Bell Tolls

Hey peeps.  Shit went down the drain.  Long story short, I am no longer in grad school. I've decided this is not the place I should be in and that I've chosen to make the difficult decision of moving on; while I will technically be on leave, I find it unlikely for things to change enough to convince me to return at the end of the year. As it stands, the American academy increasingly seems hypocritical in its claims to desire to foster the intellectual and spiritual gain of people of color and other disadvantaged groups.  The situation is bad everywhere, but is has been particularly challenging for me in this department.  I can't bear to be in a place where racial politics are a spectacle and a gimmick.  My embodied memories, scars in my brown skin, do not allow me to ignore this and be comfortable.  To do so would be to allow others to sever me from my bodily memories and I love myself and the line of women that have given me my circumstances too much to allow that.  So if this is as life-draining and painful as it is, why bother?   There are dozens of other things I'm interested in pursuing and there really is no point to sticking around with this much grief and so little payoff.

What now? Well, I'm applying to jobs in East Asia for a long-term thing.  I'll try to get a US-based job besides Nokia once I'm back from Ohayocon.  My plan so far is to come back to Tucson and stay here until I either leave for Japan or South Korea or get a career-track position somewhere in the USA.  Mom wants me to go back to Puerto Rico to teach English or Spanish as there are several positions open with no one to fill them.  I'm going to at least apply to it and see if a couple of years back home do me well.  At this point, my options are wide open and that's both daunting and exciting.  I am hopeful that things will work out in one way or another.

In other news, Rax, Nick and I went to New Mexico for the Pokemon City Championships in Albuquerque.  2 days of intense play got me some decent results. While I didn't make it to top 4 either day, I did top cut both days.  Day one with Tornadus/Thundurus/Zekrom /Eels and day two with Donchamp.  Donchamp needs a hella lot work but I do like it enough to work on it.  I'm pretty pleased with the other deck and I'll put up the deck list in my journal soon.

I'll keep you updated on what I decide to do.

Cheers,

Zanz
