Dear Mum,

I have been in Japan for a while now, which means I have a lot to tell you about. I miss you, but I know I have to stay here. Sometimes I think I may start to cry and never stop, but then I remind myself that I won’t have to stay here forever. This place will never feel like home.

Japan is a strange place filled with an odd mix of people and cultures. I feel out of place and in the way whenever I am in the house or out and about with the people. Tokyo is a mystery, inviting one moment and filled with danger the next. Somehow, I feel strangely at home in the cities quietist corners. Perhaps growing up in a village of less than five hundred has made me unable to really live in the big city? I truly am the “country-cousin”. Er. . . bastard-love-child.

Dad and the others treat me well, don’t worry. And Saint August is certainly interesting, to say the least. Money, I have decided, makes people lose their minds and souls. People become full of themselves and spend a great deal of time looking down on others.

When I enter the school, I feel as if I’ve somehow entered a mad sketch on Dead Ringers. I honestly don’t know what to make of them. I only know I fear them and have sought out the others like me. There aren’t many, but there are enough.

Ikki-kun, whose father and mother are a famous director and actress, respectfully, here in Japan has become my friend, despite my fear of the other male students. He’s very handsome and kind, so he looks after us quite a bit.

Midori-chan, whose parents run a tea house, is very sweet. While she is friendly with the cruelest of our classmates, she is also very reserved and full of grace. She and Ikki-kun are a couple, and look like models when they are together. Well, except for the fact that Midori-chan is only five foot six.

Finally, there is Aki-chan, who’s on a scholarship. She and I both agree that things are unfair at the school, but we are both powerless to change everything over night. To make me feel better, she had promised to introduce me to some of her friends over summer break. Sadly, I had to cancel on her.

Dad, Tokyo-Mum, and the others decided we should have a family vacation to the private island of one of Dad’s old college mates. Somehow, I don’t think the vacation will be as relaxing and happy as Dad hopes.

Please stay healthily and happy.

Your Daughter,

Suz
