Sasuke would have to admit that having someone target his life was nothing new. His own gang members tried to attempt it far more routinely than he cared for [because for some insane reason they actually believed that by banding together and plotting they could somehow dethrone him], and he wasn't even going to think upon the idea of justice some others tried enforce upon him. A book, however, was a first ( ... )

Oh, why was Sasuke so swift? Hinata was still sitting on her haunches, wondering how to proceed, when she heard Sasuke's voice in front of her. It was a dangerous sound, like the growl of a wild animal that was starving....he'd always considered him someone that wouldn't mind causing her harm.

And yet...she wasn't that frightened of him, when it came right down to it. Maybe it came down to the exchange she'd seen between him and her cousin. They spoke so easily to one another and it pleased her as much as it pained her. Pride and relief edged with jealousy and regret, shaken, not stirred.

Hinata blinked up at him and tried shooting a crooked smile up at him. "Oh. Yes! Flew right out of my hand. See, I told you that you were still nice somewhere in there." She stood up quickly, tucking her book under her arm, and put out her hand to take the tome from him.

"You should practice lying more often," Sasuke said as he placed the book in her waiting hand. Lips quirked upward, the gesture amused more than anything else. Though, there was the hint of irritation in his gaze. Just a small glimpse of annoyance that was quickly overtaken by the fact that this entire situation was rather funny.

Honestly, who knew Hinata had it in her?

When he was relieved of the book, Sasuke tucked his hand into the pocket of his jeans, took the chance to study the upstairs portion of the store. Rather cozy, actually. He could easily see why Hinata would have chosen this place to hide away. Seemed like getting away was the daily thing to do when you were a Hyuuga. The thought almost lured a smile to his lips. However, it wasn't enough to usurp the smirk, though it did manage to soften the gesture just slightly.

Very slightly ( ... )

"I don't lie well under pressure." Or at all.

She wasn't sure if she was relieved or not by Sasuke's seeming lack of real animosity toward her. In a way, it was demeaning (then again, Hinata had thrown a book at his head and especially in the world they both lived it, that was not a very frightening weapon. Unless you fell under the studious category where wit is sharper than a blade, which Hinata fell squarely outside of). Hinata glanced down curiously at the book she'd attempted to commit some sort of assault with. Olympe de Gouges, huh? A feminist. Was that supposed to be irony?

She placed the book back on the shelf, feeling guilty that she had actually used someone else's property. Hinata would have paid for it, of course...although that would have been hard to explain. Hello, sir? I dropped a book out the window at my arch-nemesis-except-not-really-at-all, but I'll pay for the damages. Yes, too awkward and long. Sasuke was a real trooper for getting her out of that mess. He could have just left the book lying there ( ... )

Well, at least she stopped with the lying. Not that he wouldn't have been able to tell. After all, she really was rather horrid at it, though. . .there was something to be said for those that could admit their flaws ( ... )
