I just had to get one in before the week was over. I've slacked a couple weeks, but I figure quality is important, right?
Michelle Wie.
For those of you who don't watch ESPN, let me give you the Cliff Notes. She's an 18-year-old golfer who instead of steadily competing in her own league (LPGA), time-after-time (8 to be exact)uses sponsor exemptions to get herself into PGA events and tees-off against the men. Now, on it's face (and back when it was cool) we all said - wow! Well, if she's that good, and she can at least get into the field (the final rounds) then more power to her.
Sadly, that has not been the case. Even sadder, has been her seeming disregard for her own tour. She's never won an LPGA event, either. She barely plays in them, and the most recent diss came when she was one shot off the lead and 'forgot' to sign her scorecard, effectively disqualifying her. I'm not sure which is sadder, here. The fact she might have done it on purpose, effectively snubbing her nose at the LPGA and then deciding she was 'warmed-up' enough to try her hand against the guys AGAIN...or that she might be just that out-of-practice as to what is expected of her because she refuses to play the game. It's not like she just picked this up, folks. At thirteen, she was out there looking like the female Tiger Woods. Now, at Eighteen, she looks like a gigantic joke. It's not like you can compare her to Danica Patrick, or someone like that. Danica was asked repeatedly when she was going to win, as well. Unlike, Wie, however, she towed the line. She had consistent top-ten finishes against a field where she is just about the only female driver that matters. And hey - finally, she did win. And no one teased her for the justifiable tears. She is where she belongs. Wie, I can't say that about. Does she have it in her to compete against men? Maybe. But like anything else, you can't compete just physically. There is so much more involved and she needs to get a handle on how she plays tournaments before she starts looking outside of her own zone.
