I got the latest rough cut of Art Of Suicide through the mail yesterday.

It was the first i've seen of it and watching it was ridiculously emotional.

On a purely personal level, it just brought back floods of memories- and more then anything, watching my character on screen was like watching a distorted self...It was every bad quality that I have as a person magnified and stretched to the limit. No wonder I had such a nightmare on set, I was consistantly stressed and frayed throughout most of the process and watching my performance on screen was just really awkward. I just looked so unhappy, not just as the character but in myself as well.

Anyway, that aside. The film. I think i may have been taking crazy pills but my first impressions were mostly positive. It's got a strong story, the performances are generally great and the whole thing looks good too. I was really impressed and pretty proud.

I don't know if it was just a honeymoon period though because i watched it with a friend tonight and asked him for his honest opinions. I don't know if in doing that, I set him up to be overly critical but he had some major issues. He said he thought it was good but that the 'love interest' was absurd, that there were some gaping plot holes, and that my character, Joel, was so erratic and irrational and with such little calm screen time that the audience never really got to know him and the story fell apart at the seams.
He interestingly said that he thought it was a much stronger first half then second half, which is weird because at screenings I believe people said the exact opposite.

It's so weird talking about this project. It was a huge event in my life on so many different levels, and so much shit was going on for me at the time. I'm proud of what we did on it (and the GC too obviously!) and they'll both be remembered fondly. It's definitely a learning curve, and i need to also remember that neither have been final products yet and the best is still yet to come...

The end of them is very near though!

In other news rehearsals for Midsummer have been great. We've been military marching, jitterbugging and textually analysing today. The concept is set in 1940's war torn Britian so hopefully there should be lots of interesting things arising. It's been amazing learning how to just let Shakespeare do the work for you. It almost feels sometimes as if you needn't act at all, but just speak the words and let the langugage pain the picture. A note for me to remember!
