Jesus Take the Wheel

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snow white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her Mama and her Daddy with the baby in the backseat

Another gasp of air escaped her lungs, her fingers grabbing onto the steering wheel. Her eyes drouped, meaning she was tired. She needed sleep, but she only had a few miles to go, only. At home, in New York, her newlywedded husband, Zac Efron was with her parents, and she had been told to drive out and meet him there, much to the dismay of her parents.

In the back seat, lay her baby girl in the backseat. Two month old Madison Grace Efron. She smiled, seeing the baby so content with one of her toys. Turning her eyes back to the road, she watched the snow start to stick to the roads. She hated that Zac and her family was all the way in New York, and she had to drive however so many miles to get where they were. She hated that she had to drive on such a snowy evening to say the least.

She bit down on her lip, slowly making her way across another highway, almost near the cut off that lead to Great Neck, where her family, including her husband was. She let out a soft breath. Why of all days that she decided to drive on a snowy Friday night. She knew automatically that she should of waited until the morning, and gotten Zac to drive up and get her.

She wished that she wasn't so stubborn and told her parents that she would drive there instead of the sensible solution, one of them getting her and Madison. Rubbing her eyes, she tried to settle her view on the road, her eyes still heavily covered with sleepiness and sleep reducted. She hadn't had that much sleep the last 2 months.

Ever since Madison had been born, Zac had been on location shooting his new film 'Footloose', it was almost as if god had planned it that way, but eitherwise, it left her at home with Madison for two months, Zac unable to bring a baby with him on his travels. Filming had ended the week before, but they had decided that she would drive out on Christmas eve, him sleeping over at her parents until then.

She let out another breath, biting down on her lip still. She closed her eyes, rethinking the past few months. She didn't exactly think her life was in tip top shape anymore. She had been considered the whore in the final break-up of Zanessa after Disney had found out she was pregnant and told Zac that after filming that he and Vanessa could break-up.

She focused on the road ahead of her, or at least tried to. Her view constantly switching back to the baby, Madison, who was now fast asleep, the toy sitting lazily on her stomach. Nikki smiled to herself, exhaling and enhaling. Oh how she hated driving in weather like this.

She picked up her phone, squinting her eyes as she tried to read the numbers that sat there. "11:30PM." She mumbled, pushing her phone back down on the ground. It was almost Christmas, and she had at least another half an hour to get to her parents house, let alone to bed after putting the presents under the tree.

Fifty miles to go and she was running low on faith and gasoline
It'd been a long hard year
She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention
she was going way too fast

She didn't really pay attention to the speed that she was going at. It didn't really cross her mind. All she wanted was to get home, and go to bed, cuddling up into her husband's chest for the first time since before Madison was born. He had saw pictures of her, but never really met Madison, only a brief encounter before he had to fly.

It had been a long, hard year. Between disney finally ending the relationship of Zanessa, then Zac and Nikki getting married no more than a month later, and the paparazzi constantly after them when she was out with Madison, everyone wanting a picture of hollywood's newest golden baby.

Then, when Nikki was 9 months pregnant, due any day, Zac got a phone call from Kenny, being told that he had to film in Utah, and he would have to go immediately, there was no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It had been an emotional goodbye, and they had barely talked since then, only briefly through texting.

She missed him so much, and it was most of the reason why she had persisted on driving out to New York, to see him, and let him interact with his daughter for one of the first times. Turning her thoughts back to the road, she gazed into the rear view mirror again, adjusting so that she could see Madison, who was still sound to the world.

Hearing her phone ring, she turned her head from the road, picking it up and placing it to her ear. "Hullo?" She mumbled, rubbing her eyes. The voice on the other end immediately shot her out of her short slumber.

"Hey baby." He said softly.

"What are you still doing up?"

"Waiting for you... And My daughter, is that a problem?"

"I've got about twenty minutes or so left, I'm too tired to remember." She yawned into the receiver, hearing a soft chuckle. She sighed, rubbing her eyes again. She hated driving.

Before she knew it she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes

The next thing she knew, the car slid to the side, she was shocked, couldn't speak. She could hear his fustrated scream from the other end when she didnt reply. Letting out a breath, she closed her eyes, feeling it spin uncontrollably and just held her breath in, unable to breath. Letting out a soft sigh, she closed her eyes, awaiting the soft sound of a baby's cry.

She could feel her heart beat ten times faster than normal as the car spun around and around. In the back of her mind, Nikki still thought that the car was going to sink at any point, her baby wouldn't have a chance to live, and worst of all, she wouldn't have a chance to say goodbye. To tell him that she loved him, one last time. She kept her eyes closed, afraid of what she was going see when she opened her eyes.

There was no time to be afraid, no time to cry, no time to even think. She just needed to keep her cool, and then maybe it wouldn't sink.. as fast. She held her hand delicately to her heart, inhaling a short breath. She was so afraid, she knew she couldn't be, not for her, but for the sake of the baby. She needed to be strong, needed to not be afraid. As she opened her mouth, a wordless sob escaped her lips. She needed to be strong.

That seemed like less than a simple task anymore. She felt almost as if her world was ending, she knew her world was ending. She was on thin black ice, it was halfway into a cold winter, and the time she decided to drive to New York, the ice had become thin. She hated this. She hated not being able to control things.

"Please," she sobbed, folding her hands on her lap. She knew not to beg, she knew she had to be strong. She heard the beeping of her phone, but didn't dare lean down to pick it up. It was terrible. She couldn't think straight. All she could do was plead, plead for her life, plead for her baby's. "Don't let her die."

Her only attention was now paid towards her baby, she just kept praying for the baby's life, that if she died maybe somebody would take care of her, she hoped for the sake of everything it was Zac. She bit nervously on her lip again, closing her eyes, almost giving up.

She didn't even have time to cry
She was so scared
She threw her hands up in the air

She didn't understand why it was her that was chosen for this accident, or why she had come this far with her life, won the heart of teenage heartthrob Zac Efron, married him and had his baby. Was it really her chance to go? Was it her baby's too? She couldn't bare the thoughts that had begun to surface in her head. She absent-mindedly placed her hands across her stomach, weeping softly. As she bent forward, she thought she could feel the car tip forward and cried harder. Opening her teary eyes, she gazed down, seeing the phone. She quickly grabbed it, letting the tears trickle down her cheeks as she raised her head. "Please," she begged again. "Don't let her die."

It was hard enough to see, but she couldn't stop the tears that kept cascading down her cheek. Folding her hands together, she tipped her head down, using her last resource. Something she hadn't exactly done in a while. She kept her hands on her lap, looking up to the heavens, the tears running down towards her ear. "Please Jesus, I'm sorry for a lot of things. Just don't let my baby die."

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel

As the minutes passed, she felt her heart began to tear in two. She bit down on her lip, sniffling. "Jesus, take the wheel," she whispered, her voice almost in a singy voice. "Take it from my hands," she whispered again, tears still running down her cheek. "'Cause I can't do this all night long.." she tipped her head down. "I'm letting go, give me one more chance Lord. Save me from this road I've been on. I'm sory for everything that I've done, everything that has yet to come." She wiped beneath her eye. "So sorry."

It was then, that she heard the brief sound of sirens, she let out a soft gasp, closing her eyes slowly. She couldn't stand being this far out, the car kept spinnign, like it wasn't ever going to stop. Ever. She closed her eyes as close as possible, still silently praying, something she hadn't done in a long time. She had been more of the party girl type in the last year and a half, she was using her last resources.

Don't. Let. My. Baby. Die.

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So from now on tonight

He stood from the sidelines, watching as the people tried their best to get her out of the car, which was evidently sinking. He felt his heart strings start to be pulled at, as if at any second they would be tore into two tiny pieces. He held his hand to his heart, feeling it increase more and more. He couldn't afford to lose her, or the baby. They were too much of his life.

As the car stopped, she inhaled a quick, deep breath. She shakingly lifted her head up, staring into the rearview mirror, Madison still fast asleep. She cried, hard, even if she didn't know exactly why she was. She looked down again, seeing her hands still folded together, almost as if she had been praying the entire time. She knew exactly what to do. Bowing her head down lowly, she closed her eyes, and silently began to pray.

On the outside of the car, Zac raised his eyebrow questionly, seeing her head go down. Was she dead? Did she get hurt. He felt himself panic. Breathe Zac, Breathe. He kept telling himself the exact same thing, as if that would help him at all at this point. Biting down on his lip, he let his finger tips play with the car keys, her parents car. They didn't know anything about the accident, nor at this point did he really want them too. Letting out another shaky breath, he ran his hand through his hair, sighing.

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel

She heard a slight knock on her door and half jumped, seeing a police officer on the ice, he had a huge grin on his face. She didn't know why he did. Looking around, she no longer felt her heart racing. Had she passed out? She bit down on her lip, slowly feeling the air hit her skin. "Nikki, honey, don't be afraid." His voice sounded friendly as he held out his hand. "Don't worry, you're safe."

She nodded slowly, taking his hand into her shivering one, stepping out onto the- ground? She looked around, seeing that her car had been dragged over to the ground, hauled. She let out another shaky breath, walking back and grabbing the baby from her car seat. She held her tight. "I'm so sorry baby," she whispered. "So, so sorry." She hugged her as tight as she could, hearing a person clearing their throat and looked up, immediately gasping.

"Zac?" She asked, bitting down on her lip. She didn't want this to be a dream, and that she was going to pinch herself and wake up at any moment. "Is it really you?" She asked, her voice quivering. She walked over to him slowly, onto to fall into his chest, letting Madison have her breathing room as they hugged. She felt amazing in his arms. She felt him kiss the top of her head.

"Yeah, I'm really here." He answer, wiping under his eye. He wanted to be manly about the whole situation, but found no comfort in hiding his feelings anymore. He kissed her head again, hearing her shattered cry. He felt his heart break softly. He hated how she was so shivery.

"I love you," she whispered softly, silently thanking the Lord that she was still here. That she was still alive. And best of all, that her baby was still breathing. She looked up at the heavens. "Thankyou," She whispered, hearing him speak that he loved her too. She loved him so much.

There was no way she could ever let go again. Ever, of the faith she had. She couldn't let it go. That night, she had made a promise, and she intended to keep it. Thankyou God, Jesus, thank you for everything. I promise to try my hardest to be the best person I can be. Thank you for giving me my second chance. Thank you for giving my baby a second chance. She smiled softly, digging her head back into Zac's chest. "Come on Sweetie, lets get out of here." He heard her say. She looked up at him, nodding softly.

Jesus, thank you for taking the wheel for me. Nikki thought before cradling Madison out with them to his car, the police helping them pack everything back into the new car. With a thankyou, and a merry christmas, the trio drove back to the Blonskys', ready to at least try and start their holidays out good. Deep down inside, Nikki already knew they were.

Oh I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
From this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel
Oh take it take it from me
Oh

The. End.
