Incidentally, despite his rough, prickly exterior, Kyouya really did like to take care of things. He had taken Ren in for a night before out of arguably motherly instinct, and he even continued to share his apartment with said boy and his “boyfriend” (as Kyouya appointed him) out of the goodness of his heart. At least, it was the goodness of his heart or just plain pity. Possibly something in between.
He liked to believe he was a relatively sensible person. After his various experiences and encounters, he found it unreasonable to not be one. This was probably the primary reason he got along well with Rai. Or rather, he got along with Rai on sensible matters for the most part--Ren was the insensible one most of the time, and Ren was the one who caused insensible disagreements between the two. Arguably, Ren caused a myriad of disagreements between Kyouya and Rai (such as who got to share the bed or couch with him), but that was a completely different story
