Title: Sunburned
Series: Tsubasa - Horitsuba-verse
Characters: Kurogane, Fay, Yuui, mention of Yuuko
Prompt: joasakura: "Horitsuba Gakuen: the twins go to the beach. With Kuro :)"

“Waaah, it hurts so baaaaad!” Fay whined, trying to wriggle away from his brother.

“It’s your own fault for not wearing sunscreen, idiot.” Kurogane grumbled from his lumpy single bed. Why Yuuko-sensei had only made sure to book single rooms for the students - and not for the teachers too - was beyond him.

“He did,” Yuui replied, “We both did. He’s just not used to it.”

That made sense, Kurogane supposed. The hottest climate Fay had ever experienced was mid-Japan, which was never hot, just humid. Italy, he’d heard, got extremely hot - especially in summer - so it did actually make sense that the only one burned was Fay.

Not that Kurogane cared, after all. Some of the other kids had been burned too, but none of them were making half the racket Fay was.

“I hate the beach,” Fay murmured petulantly into the bedsheets.

Kurogane ‘tsk’ed. He really hoped that meant that Fay would be more tolerable when they got the train back to the school and not bouncing around like a firework like he was on the outward journey.

“Okay, you’re done.” Yuui told him, recapping the After-Sun Lotion, “I’ll put more on in the morning. It’s good you sleep on your front, you weirdo.”

Fay grumbled in response, hardly amused.

-

Unfortunately, Fay’s bad mood extended for the next few days they were at the beach and he was so sedate that students were actually pausing before saying his name, evidently wondering if the twin teachers had swapped personalities.

Strangely, in an effort to keep from burning more, Fai had also taken to wearing his coat when they were outside, believing that the “Evil Ultra Violet Rays of Doom” could penetrate up to three layers of clothing, or something ridiculous like that. Rather annoyingly, though, this put Fay in an even worse mood and made him close to passing out from dehydration on more than one occasion. Even so, he persisted with his moronic solution, saying that he’d rather spend the rest of the trip unconscious in the hotel room than outside in the sweltering heat.

It wasn’t too long before even Yuui grew tired of his brother's childish behaviour.

-

Kurogane often woke with a twin on each side when they were at home, but it came as a slight shock to find Yuui snuggled up to him one morning, particularly as Yuui hardly ever cuddled up to anyone without his brother there first.

A glance at Fay showed a still-pink back facing their direction.

Kurogane wasn’t stupid. He understood immediately, and didn’t mention it at all, no matter how (secretly) anxious it made him.

He didn’t have long to ponder, however, as Yuui soon stirred, leant up to kiss him and muttered ‘you think too loud’ against his lips.

Fay’s form shifted a little in the other bed.

Kurogane’s eyes lingered on him for a moment longer before tightening the arm he had around Yuui, settling back to sleep.

The next morning, after breakfast, he returned alone to the room the three of them shared, having forgotten his super-cool-cop-style-reflective-shades and paused in the doorway. Fay obviously hadn’t realised he was stood there, and was sat on the bed next to the window, staring longingly at the beach and the sea that stretched out in front of the hotel.

Kurogane closed the door quietly.

Fay’s mood was starting to rub off on the other teachers, especially his brother, and Kurogane realised that unless something was done, nobody would go home and have happy memories of this trip.

He sighed and went to find the headmistress. The blonde idiot had better appreciate this…

-

“Kuro-tan, why are we on the beach-“

“-In the dark?”

It had always annoyed Kurogane a little that the twins finished each others’ sentences, but right now he didn’t care.

“It’s light enough to see,” he grunted, “I just couldn’t stand your whining anymore, go make a sandcastle or something.”

There was a little pause before a light of comprehension lit in Yuui’s eyes and he nudged Fay, saying something in that freaky made-up language they both spoke when they were drunk, tired or thought they were being secretive.

Fay’s face then broke into a massive grin, “Oh, Kuro-pop-sensei is so sweet!”

Kurogane’s eye twitched and he felt the annoying blush on his cheeks, arguing “You were pissing me off with your bitchi- mmph...” before being silenced with Fay’s favourite shut-Kuro-loud-up technique. Fay then pulled Yuui out on the sand to play games with him, the PE teacher watching from a safe distance.

Firecracker Fay was much better than Sunburned Bitching Fay any day, Kurogane reflected.
