Not TOO Humbuggy, I Think...

A whole year has come and gone (more or less) and the Yule season is upon us.  The Ghost of Conspicuous Consumption, er, I mean, Christmas Present, has ridden into town on his big ol' Harley (gotta keep up with the times, Mr, Dickens) and eventually it'll be time to raid the stockings, squeal, use up a kajillion batteries, eat food until you're ready to collapse into a pile of figgy pudding, etc. etc.

However, there is still that TINY part of me that finds a few magical moments, somehow, in the quiet times.  Like 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'.  Never fails to get me crying at the crucial point where the Grinch's 'small heart grew three sizes that day'. Or the song I'm about to quote, which, ironically, can be found as part of the soundtrack of 'The Odessa Files', which I think came out in 1974.

Yes, it's sung by Perry Como, who some people regard as the quintessential lounge lizard.  Although, by all accounts, the guy was a pretty decent human being, and he does have a pretty smooth voice.  Here's the kicker, though-- the music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber (yes, that 'Phantom of the Opera' guy) with lyrics by Tim Rice (anyone remember 'The Lion King'? No? How about 'Jesus Christ Superstar', 'Evita', and 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'?)

Be that as it may, though, just set all that aside and see if maybe, somewhere inside of you, the words touch something the way they do me.  And I wish you all a Christmas Dream.

Watch me now, here I go, all I need’s a little snow!
Starts me off, sets the theme,
helps me dream my Christmas dream.
Every year I dream it, hoping things will change,
An end to the crying, the shouting, the dying,
And I hope you will dream it too!
It’s Christmas, remember?
We’ve got to remember!

So light the light, I’m home tonight,
I need you to warm me, to calm me, to love me,
To help me to dream my Christmas dream!

Crazy things, said and done,
Every single day but one!
Every night should, I believe,
Be the same as Christmas Eve,
Nights should all be silent,
Days should all slow down,
An end to the hurry, the noise and the worry
And I hope you believe that too
It’s Christmas, remember?
Does no one remember?

The whole world needs a Christmas dream,
We need it to warm us, to calm us, to love us,
To help us to dream our Christmas dream!
