The SSSS Crew as Indie Fragrances

Feb 03, 2016 19:29

This is silly, but I'm posting it anyway. Today I found myself thinking that the scent I was wearing reminded me a lot of Sigrun - so why not pick out scents to match my impressions of the whole crew....

Note: In some cases, I couldn't decide between two, so I provided alternates. Also, this is obviously only limited to the perfumers that I follow... alternate suggestions would be totally welcome so I can acquire samples and see if I agree.

Lalli: Winter Kitty by For Strange Women
"Winter Kitty" doesn't just suit Lalli in name. It has fresh bite to it in the form of mint and evergreen, surrounding a body of woods and frankincense, giving it an impression of something more sturdy than it seems at first. Mixed in with that are hints of sweet vanilla and smoke - perhaps he has been hanging around Emil?

Sigrun: Artorius by Traveling Vardo
"Artorius" is a strong, earthy scent fit for a warrior like Sigrun. There are no delicate florals here. "Artorius" is rich, spicy, smoky, and long-wearing; it's primarily a frankincense-sandalwood-cedar mix, with oakmoss, vetiver, and black pepper to give it some kick. It's powerful - but not overpowering (unless you're a troll).

Mikkel: Nightshade Garden by For Strange Women (or Breath of God by Lush)
"Nightshade Garden" is herbal and clean; a mix of tomato vine, citrus, and leaves, which gives the impression of a freshly-watered vegetable garden. This wears away to a base of bay and olive leaf, bringing to mind the comforts of the kitchen. A sturdy and well-built scent, but not necessarily one that everyone would get along with.

"Breath of God" is mainstream (and so shouldn't be on this list) but it also seemed a good fit. This one is a light, fresh scent that brings to mind baking soda and clean laundry. It has a hint of citrus to give it some bite, like well-timed snark.

Emil - Fireside story by For Strange Women (or Hearth by Traveling Vardo)
"Fireside Story" is primarily composed of smoke, woods, and resin, with a hint of vanilla sweetness that endures long after the smoke has worn away. It has more of an outdoor rather than indoors feeling to it; less "fireplace" and more "firepit" - or perhaps "controlled burning"....

"Hearth" is unfortunately seasonal-only, but it works very well as an alternate scent for Emil, though very different from "Fireside Story". It evokes Emil at home rather than on the job. It's a luxurious, gourmand scent, composed primarily of roasted nuts, buttery caramelized sugar, and vanilla. Very decadent - maybe a little bit too over-the-top in that regard.

Tuuri: Georgina by Sara Wen
"Georgina" is fairly simple: peaches, black tea, and mint, with an earthy incense base. But simple does not mean simplistic. This scent is sweet but not cloying, and welcoming and natural in its sweetness rather than decadent (unlike "Hearth" for Emil...) It has a very solid undertone that rounds it out comfortably. It isn't strong, and it wears close.

Reynir: English Heather by Sara Wen (or Horse by For Strange Women)
"English Heather" is a mixture of heather, moss, and musk - it gives the impression that someone (I wonder who) has been rolling around in flowers and fresh greenery. It's a flighty scent, going on with an overpowering, energetic floral burst before it mellows out to something much more reasonable, with the mosses becoming more dominant over time.

"Horse" has a name that suggests something a little overpowering, but it isn't at all. It's a sunny, comfortable, welcoming scent: well-oiled leather, clean hay, and lots of clover to give it sweetness. Well-suited for a farmboy - or for a traveller.
