Last night, I watched Metropolis (1927) for the first time. Oh man, is it ever good! I'm so glad people nudged me toward watching it, as otherwise I probably would have dragged my feet some more.
It was generally recommended to me in the sense of, "Since you liked The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, you should watch this." The films aren't very similar, though they are from around the same general time period. In a general sense, I find Caligari more visually arresting and aesthetically appealing. But for plot and characters, I prefer Metropolis.
I'm really glad that though parts of the film was lost, a lot of it was eventually recovered, even if the quality of the Argentine sections is not as good as the other pieces. I wonder if some day a better quality version of the full original cut will be found? Probably not, but it's interesting to think about.
Somehow, I've fallen completely in love with Rotwang the Inventor. I don't know what it is about him - the long coat? The crazy hair? He was wearing only one glove before it was cool. (Hah!) There is something about his passion to resurrect Hel in the form of the "machine-man" (or machine-woman, rather) that I find really fascinating. He lost his hand (how? it isn't quite explained) but he considers that a fair price for succeeding in the project to reimagine Hel as a machine. But would that be enough, really?
I kind of want to watch it again, just to speculate endlessly on his internal logic and what little hints we get at his past relations with Hel and so on. Even if he is a massive creep, I just find him so interesting.
Anyway. I took a bucket of screencaps from the film - not just Rotwang; lots of other things too. Some of Maria's scenes are absolutely fabulous. I want to icon/photoset the entire damn film.
