I was hoping to enjoy some time outside, because it's been so nice lately. But that... didn't happen. It rained last night (in January?! This never happens! We're too far north for rain in January!) so today all the roads and sidewalks were complete ice. ... I'm going to go out as soon as I'm finished this entry, to tackle some of that and make sure our driveway is safe for my parents to walk to their vehicles.
So instead, I tackled The Phantom Menace. And... I enjoyed it almost as much as I did the first time I saw it. It might even be my favourite of the Star Wars films (so far - I still have two more to go). Which is pretty unusual, but eh. There might be some nostalgia factor here, in fact there probably is, but... there we go.
A few things that struck me - compared to the old films, there's less stuff happening in space in this one. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but it stuck out. There were a few things that could have been trimmed here and there - the pod race could have been a tad shorter, for example. Also, the score for this film is nowhere near as impressive as the old films. Not sure if it steps up its game in the other two; going to have to see.
Lots of stuff that I loved, though. Amidala in general. Darth Maul looking cool (those lightsaber fights at the end!!! Ahhhhh). Qui-Gon Jinn in general... actually, watching this reminded me that I used to ship him with Obi-Wan, haha. Visuals-wise, well, the smaller amount of space stuff was disappointing, but Naboo and the city of Theed looked pretty cool.
And... I really loved the Gungans. Yes, even Jar Jar Binks. But mostly what draws me in is the species design, and their underwater city, and their battle tech was pretty cool, and... so on. But this might be a nostalgia thing again - Jar Jar was my favourite when I first saw the movie. (Yes, I know, he's annoying. I was 11 or so, and I thought he was hilarious.)
Next up, Attack of the Clones... which I have seen, but basically have no recollection of.
