I'm fond of Remembrance Day. It's the kind of holiday I can appreciate. No bullshit; just quiet, solemn atmosphere.

I asked my mother to show me the information she has on my great-grandfather, who served during WWI. It wasn't much. We know that he was a sapper in the corps of Royal Engineers, that he went to the Continent, and that he lived to come back from it. And a few other small details that I can't recall right now. I think there that I have enough information that I could do some searching and find out more - at the very least where he (probably) went; but I didn't want to squint at old records today. Maybe some other time.

It would have been nice to have more personal information on him. But we don't. So many things get lost over time. It's just what happens.
