Maybe my story will be done soon
I’ve been writing today, and it made me wonder something.
A lot of times when I’m reading books (this applies moreso to sci-fi/fantasy than to other genres), the characters get themselves into situations where I can’t see an escape. Most of the time, they DO escape, using something mentioned earlier in the book, or some other character, or SOME means that I never would have thought of - but it always makes perfect sense.
When I get my characters into predicaments, sometimes I really have to stretch my imagination to get them out again, and sometimes the means are kind of dubious. Which makes me think I’m doing it wrong - do good writers take some element earlier in the story and think, “Aha! This will be the perfect way to get them out of a situation!” and THEN come up with the predicament?
Maybe I need to start thinking like that. (150)
