I hope you like this chapter, bb!

It wasn’t like Yunho was a bad father. No, on the contrary, he was a great father. It wasn’t his fault that he was stuck with an ungrateful child. Well, it was kind of his fault.. like 99%, but still, Jaejoong was a teenager, and not a little boy anymore. Yunho sure as hell wouldn’t have minded some gratitude every once in a while.

“So.. uh, what do you wanna do?” the older man asked after clearing away his plate.

His son grunted a response from his laidback position on the couch.

“Jae, come on. It wouldn’t kill us to spend some quality time together. I just want to understand you better. Sometimes, it feels like I don’t even know you.”

“At least you know me better than mom,” the blonde whispered, the pain evident in his voice.

“Jae..” Yunho said lovingly as he sat down next to his son, pulling the teen’s feet up to rest on his lap. “Your mother loves you, you know that. She’s just… busy.”

The teenager snorted and glared at his father, but somehow, Yunho felt like the glare wasn’t directed at him.

“Busy? Fine, if you want to be so God damn ignorant about this dysfunctional family, be my guest.”

As much as he wanted to scold his son for talking back to him, he refrained from doing so. Instead, he sighed and placed his hand on Jaejoong’s shoulder. “I know what she’s doing. I’m not blind, Jae.”

“Then do something about it! If anyone’s ruining this family, it’s her!” Jaejoong yelled before burying his face in one of the couch cushions. He knew he’d struck a nerve, but to be honest, he never felt loved by his mother. His father was different. He cared about him, and Jaejoong knew he meant the world to Yunho, but still, he missed having a mother.

Clearing his throat to prevent his voice from breaking, Yunho ran his hand up and down the boy’s back, comforting him as the first tears melted into the soft fabric of the cushion.

“I’m sorry, Jae. I.. I never knew you felt like that. I guess I always try to protect you from everything that might hurt you, but you’re old enough to know the truth.”

“And what’s that?” the blonde mumbled. “That you and mom don’t even love each other? That she’s sleeping with other men? That she’d leave us both if she finds someone and falls in love?”

On the brink of tears, the older man pulled his son in for a hug, letting him cry on his shoulder. “I’m sorry, Jae. This isn’t fair-”

“What’s not fair is that she’s cheating on you, and you have always been faithful. That’s what’s unfair.”

Hugging the teen close, Yunho allowed himself to shed a few tears. His son’s words pierced straight through his heart, and he felt like he broke into tiny, insignificant pieces, word by word. He wasn’t blind. Of course he knew that Seoin was being unfaithful, but that wasn’t what worried him. What worried him was that he didn’t even feel anything when he first found out. To be honest, he was a little relieved.

“Maybe it’s not fair, but I can’t bring myself to do anything like that to her.”

“Why not? It’s not like you’d hurt her. She doesn’t care about you.”

“Of course she cares! And she loves you, Jae. She’s just not good at showing it. You’re her son.”

“And you’re her husband. To be honest, we don’t need her, dad. She’s never here. She’d probably dance like a maniac if you told her she’s not welcome here anymore.”

Yunho cursed himself as his lips curved into a little smile. “Just the two of us then, eh?”

Hugging his father’s torso, Jaejoong nodded. “I’ve wanted to tell you this for so long.. but our relationship has been on edge lately.”

“You’re a teenager. Of course you’re on edge.”

The blonde pulled back, and wiped his tears with the sleeve of his shirt. “It would really help if you.. you know, were a little bit calmer. I get my temper from you.”

A hoarse chuckle escaped from Yunho’s heart-shaped lips. “I’m sorry for not being as patient as you need me to be. But you have to understand, you’re not always easy to deal with. It wouldn’t kill you to say thank you or I love you every once in a while.”

Jaejoong rolled his eyes. “You know I love you, dad.”

“It’s still nice to hear it. You won’t let me drop you off at school anymore, I can’t talk to you when you have friends over-”

“That’s because you’re embarrassing!”

The brunette feigned surprise. “Moi? Embarassing?”

“See, right there! That’s what I’m talking about.”

They both laughed and slumped back on the couch.

“I wish every day could be like this. It would be nice if we stopped fighting.”

“It would. But an argument every once in a while is only healthy. You’re a math teacher, I’m sure you have a lot of anger built up inside you.”

“Yah!”

He threw a cushion in his son’s face, messing up his nearly styled hair. Yunho laughed and tugged on the blonde locks. “It suits you.”

“I thought you’d throw a bitch fit and order me to dye it black,” Jaejoong whispered coyly, playing with the rings on his fingers.

“No. I mean, at first.. uh, it was a surprise. Your hair has always been black as the night, so it’ll just take some getting used to. I’m guessing Changmin was your partner in crime?”

“He had nothing to do with this.”

“Liar. He told you to say that.”

“He’s scared of you.”

“He’s not.”

“He is.”

“He’s not.”

“He is.”

“Then he’s a sissy.”

Jaejoong burst out laughing, starling his father a bit. “He totally is! God, last week when he let me copy his homework-”

“What?”

“Uh, I mean.. last week when we went to church, he let me pray first-”

“Nice try.”

Jaejoong shrugged. “Worth a shot.”

After a few minutes of silence, Yunho decided to speak. “Jae.. it’s only 4pm. Maybe we should go out and do something together? That is, if you can bear the shame of being seen with your own father.” His voice was dripping with sarcasm, much to Jaejoong’s amusement.

“I think I’ll survive. How about we go to the arcade?”

“The what?”

“God, you’re so old. Get your jacket and car keys. Oh, can I drive?”

“No, I want to live.”

Jaejoong called Changmin and asked if he wanted to tag along, just in case his father did something embarrassing and he needed someone to change identities with.

Just as the teen opened the front door, he felt his father’s arms embracing him from behind. “I’ve missed you.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You. You used to drag me along wherever you went. You used to love hanging out with me. Then you turned 14.”

He turned around and gave his father a real hug. “I guess I can try and spend more time with you.”

Yunho ignored the stirring in his chest as his son hugged him tighter.

“I love you, dad.”

He ignored it, like he always did.

“I love you, too.”
