"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Yunho sighed, knowing exactly how things would go when his wife came home. He’d pick her up at the airport, lick his lips to hide the resentment before giving her a kiss, carry her bags while listening to her droning on and on about how exhausting her job is. He knew she was waiting for him, yet he couldn’t bring himself to even pick up his car keys. He didn’t know whose heart he was about to break. Hers? Jaejoong? Or his own?

“Dad? When are you leaving?”

“Oh, uhm… I should have left 10 minutes ago, I guess.”

Jaejoong smiled a little, giving his father a pat on the back. “Come on, I’ll go with you. Everything is going to be oka-”

“No. No, it won’t, Jae. Nothing ever will.”

The young boy felt a wave of pain rushing through his chest. “Don’t say that. You know what needs to be done, and you know I’ll be here with you the entire time. The sooner the better.”

Yunho felt sick to the core. He felt as if he was embarking upon a journey no one knew the outcome of. He’d never felt so exposed, so vulnerable, so fragile. As if a gust of wind could knock him to the ground.

“We have to go, come on.”

With glassy eyes, the older man nodded. Every step he took felt heavier than the last.

After a rather quiet ride to the airport, they got out of the car, their eyes searching for the same woman. When she came into view, neither knew exactly how to react. The woman looked somewhat angered and tired. She dragged her bags alongside her briefcase, huffing and puffing.

“What the hell, Yunho? You were supposed to be here 20 minutes ago.”

She looked at Jaejoong, a forced smile painting her face. “Hello, dear.”

Did she even notice his hair? Of course she didn’t. Jaejoong was sure she wouldn’t even recognize him had not been standing next to his father. It’s funny, he thought, how she was able to recognize Yunho so easily, even though they never spend any time together. Maybe it’s just easier to remember the face of the one person you despise. Jaejoong certainly remembered her face.

“Traffic,” Yunho whispered almost timidly, “I’m sorry.”

“Hmm, fair enough. Now, put my bags in the trunk and let’s go home.”

‘Home.’ He had a feeling it meant something very different to her. To Yunho, home was wherever his son was.

Jaejoong looked at his father, giving him a reassuring nod, as to let him know, ‘it’s okay, everything will be okay. I promise.’

Shortly after reaching the house, the skies opened, drenching them to the bone. Once inside, Seoin threw her wet jacket on the floor, expecting her husband to pick it up. That’s when Jaejoong saw red.

“I hate you,” he whispered, though it was loud enough for her to hear.

Yunho tried pulling his son closer, but the teenager refused to move. Seoin turned around, hands on her hips. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. I hate you. I hate everything about you. I hate how you think you can just walk into this house thinking it’s actually yours. I hate how you treat everyone like crap, and I hate how you treat dad! You’re such a-”

With one swift movement, her hand flew across his face. “How dare you speak to me like that?!”

Yunho immediately acted upon instinct seeing his son in tears, hands covering his face. He clenched his fist, swinging it at her face, knocking her over. “No, how the fuck dare you?! He’s your son! How fucking dare you?! Who the hell do you think you are?”

Jaejoong ran upstairs, locking himself in his room. He could hear his parents shouting, glass breaking, insults thrown.

“I’ve had enough!”

“What do you think I’ve had?! Do you think I actually wanted to come home?”

“Then why did you?!”

“Because Jaejoong needs me!”

“He needs you to get the fuck out of his life!”

Behind closed doors, Jaejoong covered his ears, rocking back and forth on the floor. “Please stop,” he whispered.

“I’ve dealt with your crap for years, but I’ve finally had it! Get out before I do something I’ll regret!”

“You just made a big mistake, Jung Yunho. Mark my words.”

He heard a door slamming shut, then silence.

Jaejoong felt the last few tear drops trickling down his face. After a while, he found the strength to stand up, and walk downstairs. Yunho was standing in front of the door, frozen.

“D-Dad?”

He noticed his father’s shoulders shaking. He quickly embraced him, wrapping his arms around his shaking form.
Yunho turned around, holding onto his son as if his life depended on it, and maybe it did. “You’re all I have left.”
Jaejoong cried with him, whispering, “you’re all I ever had.”
