I think he's ignorant in the purest sense of the word. He did apologize. (Unlike many people who choose to be ignorant and think they're infallible)I think his small talk was actually his little way of trying to understand the vast sea of multiculturalism that is the United States, and the poor guy's upbringing probably didn't give him the best tools to navigate those sometimes stormy seas. Obviously he understands the basic sensitivities ("Oh, I didn't know if you were Chinese or not, you know? Because sometimes people who aren't Chinese might not like to be called Chinese, yea?") that most people not born in the States soon enough pick up on, but I'd bet he hasn't learned all the uniquely American political correctness and the different constructs behind the term "Asian." I don't think he may even know the actual English word "Asian" but a lot of people know "Chinese," even if, sadly, it's from the stereotyped images broadcast from these same United States years ago.
