The Battle of La Naval de Manila

In the middle of the 17th century, near the end of the Eighty Years War, the Dutch invaded the very young Spanish colony of the Philippines.

The Dutch - with a total of eighteen ships - were numerically superior to the Spaniards, who only had two galleons and a galley. Fearing that the battle would be lost, the Spaniards sought for the divine intervention of the Virgin Mary, showing their devotion by vowing to walk barefooted to the Sto. Domingo Church once the battle was won.

Their prayers were answered. When the first battle occurred in early 1647, the Spaniards, along with their Filipino troops, managed to defeat four of the Dutch's ships with no casualties of their own.

Five battles took place starting then, all the way up to 1648. The Dutch made one last push, once again against a much smaller adversary. But the Spaniards prevailed.

Grateful for their victory, the Spaniards gave the Virgin Mary the title "Our Lady of the Rosary of La Naval". The image of the Virgin Mary to which the title was granted still exists today, in the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City, Philippines.

Venerated in the Philippines, a feast is laid for her honor in Manila and in Quezon City every 2nd Sunday of October.

----------

In 1824, when the forest which would eventually become the City of Angeles was being cleared, the founder's wife carried an image of the Virgin Mary to protect them from natives who roamed the area.

The Lady of La Naval also eventually became the patron of Angeles City, and as with those in the capital, the people here honor the Feast of the La Naval. Along with another event, the Feast of Apung Macalulu, which takes place on the last Friday of the month, Angeles City celebrates its "Twin Fiesta" for the entirety of October. Tons of food and partying abound!!

So, my fellow Angeleños. Happy happy fiesta!!!
