For all of S2 so far, Heroes was more of a chore than a joy to watch. Much mocking and eye rolling was had between me and my sister. (Come on, how does West not come off as some creepy stalker boyfriend wannabe? And don’t even get me started on the Wonder Twins.)
Then tonight’s ep…hoo, boy. Well, the first 55 minutes seemed a tad questionable. Then there was that moment right there at the end. If you’ve seen the ep, you know which one I’m talking about. Further discussion under the cut to save those who haven’t seen it yet.
Two words: David. Anders.
I wonder if I would care as much about Kensei being Sark the Puppet Master if it wasn’t David Anders who ended up being the Big Baddie of S2. Speaking of which, I couldn’t have been the only one who noticed DA totally slip back into Sark mode. From those evil smirks he gave Hiro in the tent to slipping back into the Sark accent (as opposed to Kensei’s slightly different accent in the beginning of the season), Adam and Sark could’ve been the same person.
Not that I’m complaining about the similarities. I missed Sark, and as long as the performances aren’t 100% similar, I’m all for David Anders being employed. He was brilliant on Alias, and it’s about time more people got to recognize his talent.
And that reveal! Good gravy, that was an awesome reveal. I was hoping that when they showed that charred mask amidst the explode-y tent remnants that Kensei was still alive. I mean, the man can’t die! He’s Claire in male form! I wanted Hiro to either take Kensei into the future with him-because Hiro needed to get back to the present, like, last season-or have Kensei pull a Captain Jack Harkness (Doctor Who/Torchwood reference!) and take the slow road to the present. Really, I just wanted David Anders to stay on my screen. In any case, when Kensei/Adam came around that corner, there was much fangirly clapping in my house.
As for the other characters, is it wrong that I’m all for killing off certain characters, as lovely as they are, just so the show won’t be so broad? (Nikki, West, the Wonder Twins, Micah’s cousin who can’t act, awful-accented Caitlin, I’m looking at you.) Because a lot of them weren’t in tonight’s episode, and it was pretty much the best of the season. Coincidence? Not so much.
Also, I adore Greg Grunberg so much right now. He definitely brought his A-game tonight. And yay to the Hiro and Ando reunion!
Alls we need now is for Kristen Bell to come back so she and David Anders could be blonde, blue-eyed, and eeeeeevil together. My twisted theory? This Adam guy is Elle’s father what with his inability to age and all. If/when they are revealed to actually be lovers, I’ll be thoroughly squicked out by my theory.
That sound you hear? That’s my mind being blown. Welcome back, Heroes.
