I always notice how speaking trends/vocabularies move through communities.
It's quite fascinating, actually.
Me and my friends, we like to start sentences with "You should/we should/they should."
"You should pass me that book", "We should go outside", "They should shut up".
It's only almost never a suggestion. Sometimes this is actually really annoying. Once we were hanging out and Ryan says, "We should just sit right here." And we keep walking. People kept throwing out suggestions like "We should play lap tag! We should play mafia! We should go to the park!" But we never do those things!
And there's this weird voice tone we sometimes use. It's a little bit valley girl, a little bit sarcasm, a little bit annoyance, but sometimes we use it when we're happy? I don't even know. It's a habit I kind of picked up from Teanna, I think.
Sometimes I yell for no reason. I think that might have come from Dave?
Usually when I pick up speaking habits like that, I do it on accident. But sometimes I try to pick up speaking habits on purpose. Like I've mentioned before, maybe if I watch enough episodes of the Weekenders I can become as aweseome and witty as that. Or at least memorize enough to quote.
I always notice when words become popular. Not normally popular words, like: like, cool, sucks, awesome, really, actually.
At the beginning of the year last year, everybody was saying "Fail!" Now almost no one says it anymore, and the people that do aren't considered that cool. For a while, "basically" was my least favorite word ever. Whenever someone said it, I would automatically notice, and maybe get a little angry. Now, though, it feels like the trend has faded out. And when people say "true", it annoys me as well.
The word "ridiculous" has seemed to have gained a lot of popularity. Or maybe it's just me.
Other things I notice but don't really mean to. My teacher Kate says "ultimately" a lot. This one girl says "sketchy" a lot. My brother says "really?" after almost anyone says anything. Sometimes I do to. But it's pretty silly, because it's like "Why would they lie about that though? They probably get annoyed with me repeating it."
People all have their weird every day catch phrases.
Me? Well, I'm pretty boring. I say things like "Awesome" (usually sarcastically), "Alright...", "I don't undertstaaaand", "What are we doiiing / What am I doiiiing here?", "This is ridiculous", "Please don't do that ever again."
If I were a normal person, that last phrase would be more like "Stop it right now." But no. I have to go and use PLEASE.
Yeah. I'm a winner.
ETA: I hate when people end their senteces with "so...". Someone says something.
A: Hey, dude, why weren't you at the party?
B: I had to go the the dentist, so...
A: Wow, you're so good at sports!
B: Well, I used to play soccer, so...
A: What's the answer to number 5?
B: I didn't do my homework last night, so....
And it's like SO WHAT? Either answer the question, or add to the "so..." to complete your sentence!
I hate when people don't finish their sentences, or expect you to fill in the blanks. Even if I DO know what they're saying, usually I just wait through all their lengthy pauses for them to get to the point. I mean, I wouldn't want someone interrupting ME when I'm trying to get to something.
It just bugs me.
BUT HEY, WHAT IS YOUR EVERY DAY CATCH PHRASE(s)?
