We have closed sign ups on a total of 1721. What that means is:
- We’re about to start matching, involving both technological & manual steps.
- You will no longer be able to edit your sign-up.
- The New Year’s Resolution collection for 2016 is closed.
- The signup number will change slightly as we delete duplicate signups.
- Assignments are coming. These may be sooner that you'd expect as the new matching code is very fast! However, it depends on whether everyone has a possible recipient. If there are participants without recipients, we'll have to contact them to add more offers.
- Now is a great time to finish your letter! If it’s already finished, check that it is visible to the public.
- Now is also a great time to double-check how easy it will be to access any canons you have offered.
- Finally, please check what email address is associated with your AO3 account. If you got a message here, how quickly would you pick it up? This is our primary way of contacting you in the case of problems, or questions from your writer.
- For other forms of notification, please remember that we have an unofficial Twitter feed and Tumblr - take note if these are your preferred channels.
If you’re unmatchable
If none of your offers have requests, we will ask you to add more characters or fandoms. You can check whether this is likely by looking at the
sign-up summary to see if any of your offers appear. If they do, you’re likely to be safe. If you’re not sure, please keep an eye on the email attached to your AO3 account, as we will shortly contact anyone with no possible recipients.
How does matching work?
The system first generates a list of the all the possible matches for each person.
If there are any people with no possible recipients, the process stops until their sign-ups are edited or removed. The mods will contact these people and sort this out before assignments can be generated.
The system then produces a list of possible assignments. There will be a list of people who have not been matched - this does not mean there were no possible matches for them, only that the system could not make a perfect match for all the assignments. (For example, if two people have only one possible author and it is the same person, they obviously can't both be that person’s recipient. This is fairly rare, but in a challenge the size of Yuletide there are never going to be perfect matches.)
The unmatched authors with no recipient will be manually assigned to someone they can write for. Since that person already had an assigned author, they may get two stories. The unmatched recipients with no author will be sent to the pinch hit list (after assignments have gone out).
Once everyone has a match, the mods will send out assignments.
