I drove around downtown for a while watching the celebrations and the people smiling and laughing and it hit me:
Never in my life have I ever seen any large group of people this united. Everywhere I went people honked and yelled at me, people hugged me, people shared their drinks and whatever they had. When they were shooting on campus I grabbed two girls that were frozen in terror and dragged them to my room. Anyone who didn't have anywhere to go when they got in my dorm were ushered into random rooms to hide and defend ourselves.
When they announced the winner people cried, people laughed, people hugged and toasted each other. The bar I was in gave everyone champagne and we all toasted and danced and sang for hours. When he gave his speech I began to cry because...well, this is something absolutely HUGE. A guy next to me put his arm around my shoulders and hugged me tight, tears running down his face too.
For the first time in forever, I have hope. Not because we have a new president, but because we as Americans have changed. Thank you, Obama.
