Chapter 1: Bestfriends
It was a beautiful Saturday...the wind softly rustling the leaves on the big tree you were currently using as shade. Chipmunks were busy picking up acorns, rabbits were running around. You smiled and thought “It’s a beautiful day”. You close your eyes and let the sound of nature be your lullaby. As you were about to doze off, you heard someone calling your name…
“Jae Hwa!! Jung Jae Hwa!”
Opening your eyes you see the familiar figure of your bestfriend running towards you. You smiled then stood up, brushing invisible dirt.
“Hey Joon… why are you looking for me?”
“Jae Hwa, you should call me Oppa” He pouted and you chuckled.
“I don’t want to.”
“Why not!?!?”
“Just because” you said…ending any complaints he may have. “Why were you looking for me anyway?”
Joon beamed. Suddenly remembering the reason he was there. “Jihoon hyung is visiting today!”
“Jihoonnie oppa? Really? Why haven’t umma and appa say anything?!”
“Maybe they wanted to surprise you” Joon replied.
“Well it isn’t a surprise now is it?” you smirked.
“Ah… oh right?! Can you not tell your parents I told you HwiJae? Please? They’ll kill me!”
“You’re exaggerating Joonie. You know how my family loves you. Come on let’s go and meet Jihoonnie oppa. I’m sure Yunnie oppa is still at home today.”
You walked ahead with Joon following closely behind you. Smiling while looking at your back, he whispered softly… “I have such a pretty girl for a best friend.”
Talking about you and your family, Jung Jihoon, the oldest son is currently the CEO of a multinational company with its base in New York City. Jung YunHo, second child is a top student in Seoul University. He’s on his third year college taking up Medicine. Everybody expects YunHo to take over the family hospital currently directed by the Jung Appa, Dr. Mun Hee Jung. The Jung omma, Jung Yeun-ja is an executive for a big production company in Seoul. And you are Jung Jae Hwa, youngest of the three Jung siblings. Currently a sophomore on Hansung Science High School, you are considered as the most laid back member of the Jung family. It doesn’t mean that you are untalented but you just like doing everything on your own pace.
After a few minutes of walking-running-jogging back to the Jung Mansion, the best friends have arrived. You excitedly opened the doors and not wasting any more time, you glomped at the unsuspecting CEO. Joon chuckled at your antics and carefully closed the door.
“JiHoonnie oppa!!!!! I missed you so much!!”
“Whoa! My favorite dongsaeng is here…” JiHoon smiled his normally reserved charismatic smile for the youngest Jung while patting her arms around his neck.
“What about me Jae-Jae? Are you forgetting about me now that hyung is here?”
You grinned and clung closer to JiHoon... “Of course not Yunnie oppa… I love you too but I really did miss JiHoonnie oppa”
YunHo chuckled and adjusted his glasses, “I was just kidding Jae-Jae… ah Joon, please sit down. Jung HwiJae, you shouldn’t have left your guest at the door.”
“Oops! Sorry Joonie! I was just excited”
Joon smiled and sat on one of the empty chairs as you got off your oldest brother. You sat beside YunHo who continued reading one of his thick reference books and JiHoon sat on your opposite side.
“So Joon, are you courting our princess?”
Joon’s eyes grew wide as saucers and his mouth was open in shock. You shook your head and sighed… your brothers never failed to tease your poor best friend until he cries.
“JiHoonnie oppa, Joonie and I are best friends. We aren’t dating or anything.”
“T-t-that’s… um…”
“Jae Hwa, there’s nothing wrong if the two of you date. I knew Joon since you were both in diapers and I think he is a good guy.”
Joon blushed like crazy and he was also starting to sweat profusely… worried at your best friend’s state, you lightly tapped on your second brother’s leg asking for help.
YunHo sighed and closed his book. “Hyung, I think we have some cake on the fridge. Jae-jae, can you get some for us? ”
You grinned and gave your second brother a quick peck on his cheek before you grabbed Joon’s arm and rushed to the kitchen.
JiHoon leaned back on the soft cushions of the sofa and he glared at his younger brother who was smiling innocently…“You saved them again YunHo.”
“Mianhe Hyung… you know I can’t resist our Princess’ puppy dog eyes. Besides, if they are really together, she would personally tell us don’t you think so?”
“I suppose you are right Yun… it’s just that I hate thinking that our little princess would be dating someone I barely know. I can’t just give her away to some stranger and it doesn’t help that I have to stay in New York all the time. I don’t know what’s happening to my little sister.”
“I understand perfectly hyung… I feel the same way but Jae-jae’s old enough to decide for herself. Besides, I am still here… Umma and Appa are here. Would it help if I promise to update you more often than I usually do?”
JiHoon laughed heartily and ruffled YunHo’s messy hair. “I hate to say this Yun but we both have a serious sister complex. “
YunHo grinned and replied, “I know Hyung… I’m worried that we might be too protective over her. I don’t want to be misunderstood by our Princess. “
“She won’t… I am confident because she knows how much we love her.”
Meanwhile at the Jung family kitchen, you took out the Black Forest cake from the fridge while Joon is taking out plates and the forks.
“Um… Jae?”
You placed the cake on the kitchen counter and glanced at your friend whose carefully placing the plates on the table. “Yes?” you asked.
Joon stopped what he was doing and turned around to face you. You found yourself staring at your bestfriend’s handsome face. “I’ve never noticed how sharp Joonie’s facial features are. I’ve got a good looking guy for a best friend“, you thought. You were staring at him for some time that you hadn’t notice that Joon had gotten closer. When you got to your senses, you were just inches apart. A small move from any of the two of you would result to a kiss.
“Wha-?! W-what are you doing?!” you stammered. Heat slowly creeps to your face and your cheeks are now dusted with a soft pink color.
Joon grinned at seeing your blushing face. He lightly pinched your nose, “Aigoo… my Jae-jae is so cute.”
“W-who says I’m yours?” you looked away. The closeness of the two of you is starting to make you nervous for reasons that you couldn’t understand at all. You lightly pushed him away which earned a chuckle from Joon, “You have the most interesting reactions, princess”
“Shut up and give me those plates, heartthrob.” You spat back but it wasn’t as deadly as you intended cause you weren’t able to suppress a small smile. Both of you were wearing smiles and continued your task but inside a small spark was starting to ignite.
“Jae makes me happy but I wonder if I do love her like JiHoon hyung was hinting? We’ve been together since we were kids, how would I know if this is love?”
“Why is my heart beating this fast? That was Joon, my bestfriend since we were kids… I can’t understand...”
You were broken out of your stupor when you heard your brother YunHo’s voice booming from the living room. “Ya! What are you doing back there? You were just supposed to get the cake!”
Joon beat you to responding, “We’re almost done YunHo hyung!”
“You better not be doing anything to my sister Lee Joon.”
You blushed to an even darker shade of pink after hearing what your brother said. Joon gave you a reassuring smile and squeezed your hand lightly. “We better go before they think we’re making out in your kitchen. I’ll take the tray, Princess. Go on ahead and make your entrance”
“Ah, thanks Joonie.”
You released a deep breath before putting a smile on your face. I can’t let my brothers see me like this. If they see me with even a blush, I’m not going to live this down.
You walked ahead and sat between your brothers. After Joon arrived, you served the cakes and water for the three of you and orange juice for YunHo.
“What took you guys long?”
You and Joon exchanged a look and smiled before you replied, “Nothing YunHo oppa… we merely followed your order.”
You saw your brother smile at each other and you bit your lip, “Why must they know me too well?”
Joon felt that he was being scrutinized by the older Jungs and he was embarrassed. The Jung brothers had always teased him about his relationship with Jae Hwa but he used to just shrug and let them be. Now, he was blushing and he knew the two were enjoying his discomfort, “Um, Jae… I’d better go home. I didn’t tell mom I’m coming here.”
YunHo knew Joon was running away and he smirked. Jae Hwa saw YunHo’s smirk and she was panicking in her mind. That devious smirk of her brother spells nothing but trouble for her. Before any of her brothers could talk, you stood and smiled. “Oh okay. Um, I’ll put the cake in a container and you can eat it at your house okay?”
Joon smiled and shook his head, “No, it’s okay… really. I’m a bit full anyway. JiHoon hyung, YunHo hyung, I’m happy to see you both.”
JiHoon placed the glass he was holding on the table and yawned. “It was nice seeing you again too Joon. Guys, I’m retiring for the night. Jetlag’s catching up.”
YunHo adjusted his glasses and chuckled “hyung, you never had jetlag… must be getting old…”
JiHoon snickered and ruffled YunHo’s hair which earned a protest from the younger male. “I’m only a few years older than you are, shrimp.”
YunHo was still pouting and Joon was now gaping at the sight of both successful men acting childishly In front of him. You saw Joon’s expression and laughed real hard earning a harsh glare from the latter. “Let’s go Joonie, I’ll walk you to the door.”
The two of you walked to the door and Joon opened the door and walked out. Just as you were about to close the door, you heard Joon call your name softly. You poked your head out and looked at Joon questioningly.
“Uh… w-would you like to go somewhere tomorrow?”
You raised your eyebrow, “Sure… Why are you stuttering? “
He scratched his head and is looking everywhere except you, “uh…nothing in particular. So uh, I’ll pick you up by 9.”
You weren’t able to comment cause Joon was already running towards their house which was just a few steps away from yours. “Well, that was weird…” you thought.
You sat beside YunHo who continued reading his book. It seemed that the oldest Jung had gone into his room so now it was just the two of you left. You took a bite of the cake, “Oppa…I have been wondering… where’s our parents?”
“At a company party somewhere… they told us about it last week.”
“Oh, I guess I forgot… um, I’m going somewhere tomorrow…”
You waited for any reaction from your brother while you finish eating the chocolate cake but YunHo didn’t respond so you started clearing the plates after you finished. Unknown to you though, your second brother is smiling knowingly.
