Ji Yong’s hands fell limply to his sides. That was it? It was over? Seung Ri was gone?
It can’t be, he thought. It can’t be! Things are happening too fast! This is a dream, right? This is a dream. It has to be.
Tears continued streaming down his cheeks. His mind told him nothing was true, but his heart told him otherwise; that it was reality, and Seung Ri, whom he had held in his arms just the other night, was no longer his.
“I’ve got to find him,” he muttered. “I’ve got to go look for him, and take him back. He won’t think twice about accepting me again. He’ll take me in his arms and forgive me. He’ll wipe the tears away and promise me a brighter future.”
But what if he doesn’t? He gulped. There was the chance of Seung Ri rejecting him, of saying no and leaving once and for all. And because of the crime Ji Yong committed to Seung Ri’s heart, his chances of having him back were lower than ever.
You’ve got to try.
There is no chance.
He still loves you.
Not enough to let you hurt him again.
Ji Yong gritted his teeth and ripped the letter into a million tiny pieces. He wouldn’t allow Seung Ri to walk away just like that. He wouldn’t allow him to leave without hearing him out. He wouldn’t allow him to disappear without a fight.
He grabbed his jacket and his handphone and stepped out of the apartment unit. Where would Seung Ri be, he had no clue. Where was the “someplace faraway” he mentioned, he couldn’t be too sure. Seung Ri could have moved to the suburbs; he could have flown overseas; or he could have gone to the other world.
A knot stuck in his throat. What if Seung Ri killed himself? What if heaven (or hell) was that someplace faraway? Would he follow him? Would he chase him up to the point of committing suicide as well?
Ji Yong dashed up the stair case of the building, up to the rooftop. If Seung Ri was really planning a suicide, then it would be from the place where his heart still lay, where his love still was.
“Ri! Where are you taking me?” Ji Yong took uneasy steps forward.
“Shut it, Ji, and just enjoy your time with me,” Seung Ri chuckled and kept his hands over Ji Yong’s eyes.
The metal door swung open, and even with closed eyes, Ji Yong saw a light through the lines between Seung Ri’s fingers.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
“I’ll show you, but tell me you love me first,” Seung Ri teased him.
“You don’t need to hear me say it to know.”
“But I need you to tell me so that I can say it, too.”
Ji Yong grunted, but then whispered, “I love you.”
Seung Ri removed his hands and showed Ji Yong the twilit sky. “I love you too.”
As Seung Ri’s soft words echoed in his mind, Ji Yong almost tripped on the final step of the stairwell. He caught his balance, and his breath, and stood up before the rooftop door. His fingers trembled as he gripped the doorknob and opened the door.
Light poured into the dark stairwell, and Ji Yong stepped forward once. There he was, straight ahead of him, sitting on the rooftop ledge with his legs dangling over the busy road below. Ji Yong clutched his heart, feeling tears again.
“Seung Ri,” he whispered.
Seung Ri’s head bowed down. “I never thought you’d come.”
“But of course I’d come for you, Ri,” he told him.
“You came. Even when you knew there was no more chance between us. You came, for what, Ji Yong?”
He parted his lips to speak, but closed them again. Why did he come?
“Do you really have a reason, or did you come just out of instinct?”
“I came,” Ji Yong finally said, “because I won’t let you go so easily.”
“You’re too late, Ji; I’m already gone.”
Ji Yong’s eyes widened as Seung Ri shifted his weight on the ledge. “Seung Ri, no!”
“If I run away, how long will you try to catch me?”
“Until… until I have you in my arms again.”
Seung Ri turned to face him and stepped down onto the rooftop. “What if I wriggle away and keep running?”
“Then I’ll have to keep a tighter grip.”
Seung Ri’s eyes held no expression whatsoever. “Are you sure about that? You’ve made your promises, but you’ve broken them too.”
Ji Yong nodded.
“I gave you only one promise, Ji Yong, and that was that I’d never come back; that this breakup would be our last.”
He kept silent and his gaze remained on him.
“You know I don’t break promises.”
“You never promised me anything like that, Ri,” Ji Yong spoke up. “Because this wasn’t a breakup.”
Seung Ri started to walk forward.
“Because this was just a little slip, a little chase-”
“That you’ve just won,” Seung Ri finished for him, and walked right into his open arms.
